Summary:
The book serves as a catalogue for the exhibition "As Found", on showcase from 6 september 2023 to 17 March 2024 in DE SINGEL, Antwerp. The exhibition focuses on the new relationship between contemporary design and heritage. Using experimental, groundbreaking, (inter)national examples, the exhibition explores the different positions that contemporary designers adopt in relation to existing buildings. Architecture in Flanders and Brussels reflects a unique position in dealing with the existing built environment. Although the experimental approaches vary with different design methodologies, the audacity of the interventions remains, whether it is a medieval structure or a twentieth-century building. This book focuses on seven experimental approaches in preservation today: ensemble, void, reconfiguration, inside out, traces, mirror and nuance. These are explored through essays, realized projects and international references.

Summary:

Summary:
The series MUSA consists of twenty-six works of UV printed photographs on brass. The photographs for these works have been taken at various greenhouses in Morocco, which harvest Banana Trees. On the images we see abstract impressions of green and yellow leaves pressed against the plastic sheeting of the greenhouses. On top of that we see strips of copper wiring that keep the plastic sheets in position. It is the first series of images in Vanoverberghe’s work that solely puts the focus on the natural aspect of our surroundings. The work is a continuation in Vanoverberghe’s research to the material in which he presents his photographs. The visual atmosphere of the works constantly change due to the light that is captured or reflected by the brass material.

Summary:
"Modern Chinese architecture: 180 years" tells the dramatic story of the transformation of Chinese architecture from a predominantly modular, timber-frame, single-story building system with ceramic tile roofs of anonymous, local craftsmen to skyscrapers designed by internationally acclaimed architects, from temple markets and itinerant peddlers to megamalls, and from open air stages to auditoriums and stadiums with cutting-edge acoustics. The architectural transformation occurs as China transforms from a dynasty ruled by emperors to a republic to a people’s republic, from a country in which fewer than half the male population, and perhaps 10 percent of the female population could read to at least 97% literacy, and from a population that was fewer than 5 percent to more than 60 percent urban.

Summary:
With buildings and cities being one of the primary accelerators of climate change, the tightening of urban environments is one of the mechanisms by which architects and urban planners can affect change. To date, models of urban densification and compact cities have been focused on sites of urban consumption—residential, commercial, civic and social spaces. Little thought has been given to the vast productive hinterlands around the world that support cities, through the growing of food, generation of power, production of goods and disposal of waste. Working through three scales of analysis, across three cities in the Asia Pacific Region, and deploying varying design research techniques ranging from critical observation to speculative scenario modeling, the book presents a series of projects that seek to retro-fit an existing urban environment with a productive program.

More than three decades after its original publication, this new edition of ''Tokyo Style'' revives a cult classic and token collector’s item. Kyoichi Tsuzuki’s timeless photographs offer an intimate look at Tokyo homes as they are truly inhabited, presented here with a refreshed design that preserves the original book’s generous format. A selection of the book’s iconic images culminates in a new afterword by Kyoichi that unravels the nostalgia sparked by his work, which captures an analogue world of rich self-expression. A foreword by writer Barry Yourgrau, a longtime friend of Kyoichi, meditates on the ‘untidy and prodigiously cluttered’ hideouts of Tokyo, filled with everything '‘from the raunchy to the freaky and funky to the kawaii (“cute” in Japanese)'’. ''Tokyo Style'' invites readers into the routines of one of the world’s major metropolises, offering a template for the ways we might live more connected with ourselves and our community.

Plastic containers from around the world figure in this series by still-life photographer Shinichi Kaneko. The containers originate from 20 cities, the majority of which Kaneko visited himself, making the rounds past DIY stores, mid-sized supermarkets, suburban big-box stores, and more in search of bottles of intriguing shape. He then shot the objects under strong lighting while using filters to minimise surface halation and render a matte finish, a process he describes as akin to puzzling out a chess problem. Yet the results reveal aspects and guises that ordinarily remain hidden from view. The aim of Kaneko’s project is to discover new narratives within readymade products.

Summary:
"The anatomy of the architectural book" examines approaches to structuring, constructing and designing architectural books and traces how they have changed over time. The discipline has been exposed to debates, just as building construction has been exposed to the charms of book making. Examining the crossovers between book culture and building culture makes the axes visible along which architectural knowledge circulates through books into buildings and back – from the celebration of specific architectural practices to the production of unique books, using pages and print to convey architectural ideas. Dissecting a wealth of books through five conceptual tools – texture, surface, rhythm, structure and scale – André Tavares analyzes the material qualities of books in order to assess their crossovers with architectural knowledge. The detailed history of Sigfried Giedion’s Befreites Wohnen and the two incarnations of the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park and Sydenham provide a background that confront us not only with the rise of the industrialized book but also with the configuration of the book as a unique visual device. Richly illustrated with samples from the library of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the volume discusses a wide range of authors, including Vitruvius, William Morris, Gottfried Semper, El Lissitzky and Le Corbusier.

Summary:
James Baldwin was a uniquely prophetic voice in American letters. His brilliant and provocative essays made him the literary voice of the Civil Rights Era, and they continue to speak with powerful urgency to us today, whether in the swirling debate over the Black Lives Matter movement or in the words of Raoul Peck's documentary "I Am Not Your Negro." Edited by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, the Library of America's Collected Essays is the most comprehensive gathering of Baldwin's nonfiction ever published. With burning passion and jabbing, epigrammatic wit, Baldwin fearlessly articulated issues of race and democracy and American identity in such famous essays as "The Harlem Ghetto," "Everybody's Protest Novel," "Many Thousands Gone," and "Stranger in the Village." Here are the complete texts of his early landmark collections, Notes of a Native Son (1955) and Nobody Knows My Name (1961), which established him as an essential intellectual voice of his time, fusing in unique fashion the personal, the literary, and the political.
