Stan Allen is an architect and educator who has won global acclaim, primarily for his work in town planning and his influential 1996 essay ''Field Conditions.'' His new book ''Situated Objects'' shows a unique facet of his creative process: a selection of small buildings and projects on rural sites, most of them situated within the landscape of the Hudson Valley, New York. They demonstrate an approach to architecture that engages in a dialogue with this partly wild and wholly non-urban environment that lies just outside the gates of New York City.

Born in 1924, Agusti´n Herna´ndez came of age as an architect in Mexico as modernist ideas coalesced with a renewed pride in the country’s past. He was a frontrunner in combining the symbols, myths, and urban planning principles of pre-Columbian civilisations to create imposing architectural monuments that even today retain their avant-garde nature—from the military academy he built as a modern-day Mayan ceremonial ground to the remote meditation centre commissioned by his sister, based on the symbolism of the snake, and the studio-home that he built for himself in 1975: Praxis, a geometric treehouse that still towers over the Bosques de las Lomas neighbourhood of Mexico City. Original photography by Ryan Lowry. Texts by Tezontle Studio & Luis Orozco Madero, Carlota Pérez-Jofre, and Enrique Giner de los Ríos.

“Does Your House Fit You?” In 1949, the Community Arts Council of Vancouver posed this question in their catalogue for the seminal ''Design for Living'' exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, arguably marking the birth of Canada’s West Coast Modernist tradition in art and architecture. Seventy years later, many of these modernist homes have been demolished for redevelopment, and yet many more have been renovated and preserved, reminders of the spirit of invention, experimentation, and enlightenment that characterized their original design.

Summary:
Memorials hold a special position in the cultural memory of communities, cultures and nations, and ''In memory of'' demonstrates this as never before. This extraordinary and moving collection of more than 60 exceptional structures commemorates some of the most destructive events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including war, genocide, massacre, terrorism, famine, and slavery. At the same time, ''In memory of'' shows that the power to overcome, to survive, even to forgive, is just as impactful and important. Thoughtful essays on the subjects of hope, strength, grief, loss, and fear help to contextualize the projects and address the emotional aspects of memorialization.
