Summary:
The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890–1954/1889–1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs. The book documents all 40 of Hans und Wassili Luckhardt’s realized buildings. Two essays deal with the unbuilt and utopian projects. Newly taken photographs and newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn complement the historical illustrations.

Summary:
There is a creative explosion of work taking place in architecture and design schools exploring materials such as mycelium, clay/earth, engineered timber, bio-based plastics and algae. This handbook of low- and no-carbon materials for architects and designers focuses on sustainable materials, their sourcing, technical properties and the processes required for their use in architecture. The book showcases new and rediscovered processes for material fabrication, responsible sourcing and creative material design. Material properties (structural, thermal, fire, health and life safety) are described and case studies from around the world illustrate the inventive ways in which these materials have been deployed in the built environment. The book is designed as an introduction to the exciting and rapidly changing world of construction materials. With a better understanding of the social, environmental and economic sustainability of any given material - alongside its technical properties - students of architecture can lead the change in responsible and creative material use.

Summary:
This book shows how architectural design can improve housing. It looks at 14 innovative multiunit dwelling projects through the lenses of current research on urban housing systems, driven by questions on social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Residential buildings designed for diverse cultural contexts are brought together and examined according to spatial antonyms: the individual and communal, the interior and exterior, and the determined and undetermined, to create a resource for future architectural practice. The book concentrates on design decisions and incorporates rich illustrations and conversations with architects and residents. It follows a series of talks curated by the Melbourne School of Design to extend the debate on the missing links between architectural practice and housing research.

Sediment is an unseen infrastructure that shapes and enables modern life. Silt is scooped from sea floors to deepen underwater highways for container ships. It is diverted from river basins to control flooding. It is collected, sorted, managed, and moved to reshape deltas, marshes, and beaches. Anthropogenic action now moves more sediment annually than "natural" geologic processes — yet this global reshaping of the earth’s surface is rarely-discussed and poorly-understood.

Summary:
Anna Tsitsishvili’s Tbilisi delivers us a contemporary outlook on Georgia’s vibrant capital at the crossroads between East and West. Her photobook attests that photography can play a role in putting the city back on the map by creating a new visual narrative that transcends the past to embrace authentic moments. Notably, the Soviet era has provided us with a glossy portrayal of the city under the empire, with the aim to convey some specific values through photography that is typical of regimes. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a subtle melancholy has seeped into those photographs. This sentiment reflected the post-imperial events and the Russian occupation, which have left an indelible mark on the entire country, the city, and its inhabitants. A new generation of photographers though has emerged in the past years, with a vision that tries to respond to that sentiment by going beyond the façade and breaking ties with the past. In their images the city looks past the streets, the buildings and the cityscapes. They venture into courtyards, homes, into the private life of people and their sincere details. Anna Tsitsishvili does so too – with her photobook she captivates us primarily with her genuineness. From sumptuous old apartments to lived contemporary rooms, from daily commutes to encounters in the busy streets, a sense of everyday poetry permeates her all-color selection.

Summary:
"Encounter educational modernism" productively revisits the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, an iconic campus from the late 1960s by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. The university is recognized for its architectural vision, its linear relationship with the spectacular landscape, and its dynamic spatial imagination of education as an expansive encounter. Designing the interdisciplinary university as a city within one building, including student housing, the campus stages public spaces of encounter to activate the concept of the student as a global citizen in a new world order. This sixties humanist imagination of the student shapes the spatial program of the architecture, a program which clashes with the current neoliberal view of the student as entrepreneur. The third book in Bitter and Weber's series on architecture and the educational complex, Encounter Educational Modernism is an artistic research project on the architecture of the University of Lethbridge and on modernist imaginations of education. It includes photographs and an introduction from the artists and contributions from University of Lethbridge professor Victoria Baster and poet and educator Jeff Derksen. The series Educational Modernism is published in cooperation with Camera Austria and will be continued with a focus on The Workers University Zagreb by Yugoslavian architects Radovan Niksic and Ninoslav Kucan.

Summary:
The firm Christoph Hesse Architects addresses the challenges of rural areas by questioning and reinterpreting traditional structures of villages and landscapes in unconventional ways. Raised on a farm in the Hochsauerland region of Germany, Christoph Hesse brings his deep connection to nature and agricultural life to the projects, which are often developed in collaboration with local and international partners. Focusing on five central themes, "Rural rebellion" presents a selection of spatial interventions through striking models, large-scale panoramic drawings, films, portrait photos and statements by the "Rural rebels". The exhibition illustrates how the projects create social, environmental and economical focal points, enabling a future-oriented transformation – one that not only improves life in the countryside, but also redefines it as a source of innovation and societal progress.

Summary:
"Viaggio in Italia," conceived by Luigi Ghirri and published in 1984, is a milestone in contemporary Italian photography, representing the "manifesto" of the Italian School of Landscape from the 1980s onward. The project tells the story of a generation of photographers who moved away from exotic travel, sensational reportage, and formalist analysis to focus on the everyday Italian landscape. This shift replaced the cliché of Italy as a uniquely wonderful place with an "anti-heroic, anti-mythical, everyday and non-rhetorical" image, as noted by Gabriele Basilico. Twenty photographers, many of whom gained international recognition, participated: Olivo Barbieri, Gabriele Basilico, Gianantonio Battistella, Vincenzo Castella, Andrea Cavazzuti, Giovanni Chiaramonte, Mario Cresci, Vittore Fossati, Carlo Garzia, Guido Guidi, Luigi Ghirri, Shelley Hill, Mimmo Jodice, Gianni Leone, Claude Nori, Umberto Sartorello, Mario Tinelli, Ernesto Tuliozi, Fulvio Ventura, and Cuchi White. The volume includes an essay by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle and a paper by Gianni Celati.

Summary:
Zygmunt Rytka (1947–2018) was an intermedia artist associated with the Polish neo-avant-garde of the 1970s and the independent artist community of the 1980s. In his conceptual work, he combined a philosophical and artistic study of nature and perception with ironic reflections on contemporary media and politics. The artist saw the camera as an instrument that creates a convention and begins to influence reality. The book—the first monograph of his photographic work in English— is a comprehensive collection including early conceptual cycles, works dealing with consumer culture, politically charged analytical studies of the language of mass media, and works focusing on the relationship between culture and nature. There is commentary on the cycles provided by notes from the author, an interview conducted by Anna Maria Lesniewska, and new texts by David Crowley, Karol Hordziej, and Daniel Muzyczuk.
