If past centuries belonged to Europe and much of the last century has been dominated by America, then now it is China’s turn. For decades, the nation has experienced unprecedented economic growth, and it managed to evade the West’s economic recession. It has gained a significant economic presence in nearly every part of the world. Yet China is now in the midst of an economic slowdown, which impacts its architecture, urban planning, and infrastructure, both at home and abroad. Nanne de Ru and Hans Ibelings undertake a closer examination of this process, with reports from Canada, Portugal, Angola, South Africa, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and Central and South America.

From A for Architect to Z for Zoning, this book provides a brief and informative overview of all the key terms describing communal planning and living.

Summary:
Built in the early 1950s in São Paulo, Lina Bo Bardi’s Casa de Vidro (Glass House) was the first real architectural project she completed after her arrival in Brazil. Built as a home for herself and her husband, it clearly demonstrates how architecture and design should keep a distance from individuals, society or community, and the natural environment – a stance that would come to underlie all of the Italian-born architect’s subsequent works. Photographed by master architectural photographer Yukio Futagawa, Casa de Vidro still appears as its designer intended, a prototype that responded to a new society, rising directly from the earth and embedded in the surrounding jungle.

Summary:
Dirk Leyman became interested at a very young age in these peculiar accordion postcard albums, which every self-respecting tourist and souvenir hunter used to take home from their holiday. Dirk started to systematically collect them as time went by. The snapshots, which are folded in zig-zag fashion, are like relics of a long-gone era. Some are veritable typographical and photographic gems. Others are borderline kitsch, with their heavy-handed use of color. Europe Express spans the decades between the two World Wars to the early Eighties, with photos of San Marco in Venice and the elegant Grand Hotels and the utopian, upstanding world of the former Soviet Union.

Summary:
The Case Study House program (1945–1966) was an exceptional, innovative event in the history of American architecture. The program, which concentrated on the Los Angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be easily and cheaply constructed during the postwar building boom. Highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home, and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture—American and international—both during the program’s existence and even to this day. With over 150 photos and plans and a map of where all houses are (or were) located.

Summary:
In 1935, well into the era of Soviet communism, Russian satirical writers Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov came to the U.S as special correspondents for the Russian newspaper Pravda. They drove crosscountry and back on a ten-week trip, recording images of American life through humerous texts and the lens of a Leica camera. When they returned home, they published their work in Ogonek, the Soviet equivalent of Time magazine, and later in the book Odnoetazhnaia Amerika (Single-Storied America). This wonderful lost work—filled with wry observations, biting opinions, and telling photographs—is now collected in "Ilf and Petrov's American road trip", the first English translation.
