Summary:
Architect Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977) played a major role in modern Dutch architecture. He designed revolutionary, complex, large-scale buildings with metropolitan allure, like the Groothandelsgebouw and the Euromast in Rotterdam and the Scheveningen Pier. In Maaskant: Architect of Progress architecture historian and Maaskant expert Michelle Provoost places Maaskant in an international and historical perspective. Hugh Maaskant is considered the godfather and forerunner of the generation of Winy Maas (MVRDV), Adriaan Geuze (West 8), Willem Jan Neutelings and Rem Koolhaas. Yet he was underappreciated for many years. Provoost describes Maaskant’s work as part of the optimistic, stimulating aspect of post-war reconstruction and the exciting world of the 1960s. She also places him in the context of Dutch architecture, both of his time and of later generations, particularly the ‘Super Dutch’.

The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet(...)

Summary:
There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our visual landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade. In 2010, Faythe Levine and Sam Macon began documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features stories and photographs of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. With a foreword by legendary artist (and former sign painter) Ed Ruscha, this book profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco's New Bohemia Signs and New York's Colossal Media's Sky High Murals.

Cycle Space is the first book to view the city through the lens - or rearview mirror - of the bicycle. It features portraits of eight major cities and their respective cycling cultures: New York, Chicago, Portland, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Budapest, São Paolo, Singapore and Sydney. Each of these cities has seen a groundswell of cyclists taking to its streets in recent years. From death-defying bike messengers to hipsters with a taste for cycle chic to commuters simply riding to work, cycling is now being viewed as more than just an alternative: it’s practical; it’s cool; it’s green.

Le Corbusier Redrawn presents the only collection of rendered original drawings (at 1:200 scale) of all twenty-six of Le Corbusier's residential works. Using the original drawings from the Le Corbusier Foundation's digital archives, architect Steven Park has beautifully redrawn 130 perspectival sections, as well as plans, sections, and elevations of exterior forms and interior spaces. These new drawings-which combine the conceptual clarity of the section with the spatial qualities of the perspective-not only provide information about the buildings, they also help students experience specific works spatially as they learn to critically examine Le Corbusier's works.
