Summary:
Informed by early twentieth-century avantgardes, principally cubism and expressionism, Dana Schutz's art is an extraordinary and joyful mash-up where a multitude of references and allusions collide. The exhilarating results can be understood as a productive conversation with the history of painting and as a compelling testament to painting's complex and unending death throes. With its conflations of Gericault, horror films, Ensor, Picasso, Guston, porn, and pop culture, her work appears to counter and confront the imperious Internet information colossus, where everything is available at once. This bilingual publication accompanies an exhibition of new and recent work. Born in 1976, Dana Schutz is a New York based artist whose work over the past decade has had a notable influence on contemporary painting. She has had solo exhibitions at, notably, Miami Art Museum (2012); Denver Museum of Contemporary Art and Denver Art Museum (2012); and Hannover Kesterngesellschaft and Hepworth Wakefield (2013). Her work is found in numerous collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Summary:
''Bedtime stories for architects'' is a compendium of texts, built works and graphic work by Peter Wilson. It offers glimpses of buildings by the German based office of BOLLES+WILSON, but it is not a monograph, it presents a cloud of discursive subjects and narratives, evidencing Wilson’s take on a wide range of academic, technical, cultural, and architectural issues. It has been called ‘tremendously cutting-edge’, perhaps because of the wry humor of the stories and Wilson’s witty and intelligent drawings – these extend to satirical portraits of – bankers, estate agents, property developers and a few OK people. Much of the book is organized alphabetically like a children’s book – A is for Albania, C is for Counterfactual Histories, G is for Guggenheim, M is for Malevich, O is for Olgiati, R is for Ritual. Counterfactual Histories (a concept from Borges) are paint-shop illustrated as surprising, poetic and enigmatic landscapes. ‘A Blue Review’ deconstructs a book on colour in architecture. Between the enigmatic graphic works are longer texts including Wilson’s extensive analysis of Studio Mumbai (first published in El Croquis), a longer investigation of the Swiss architect Valerio Olgiati and a history of Modernism in Wilson’s home country Australia.

Summary:
Born in Cologne in 1936 and based in New York since 1965, Haacke’s strong political, cultural and social concerns are reflected in his installations, texts and sculptures. Throughout his fifty-year career Haacke has frequently changed the presentation of his art to get his message across. Often borrowing from non-art sources such as corporate advertising, questionnaires or scientific experimentation, Haacke is probably the most successful and best-known late twentieth-century artist to create a political art that manages to hit its mark with succinct elegance. Haacke sometimes works almost as a sleuth-like reporter, uncovering museum politics in his art. This practice has famously led on occasion to museum officials cancelling his exhibitions. For example, his 1971 one-person show at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was cancelled in response to his proposal to present the questionable real estate dealings of several New York companies. Haacke is a unique figure in post-war art, and his work has touched on such diverse movements as Conceptual, Pop, Minimal and Land art. His integrity as well as the formal innovations of his art have proven hugely influential for many generations of contemporary artists.

Summary:
The newest title in the Princeton Architectural Press Campus Guide series takes readers on a tour of Illinois Institute of Technology, one of the landmarks of modern American architecture. With a master plan and twenty renowned buildings by Mies van der Rohe, IIT has long been a pilgrimage site for architects and students of design. Thousands of visitors arrive each year to see International Style masterpieces such as S. R. Crown Hall, home of IIT's College of Architecture and one of Mies's greatest works. Today, IIT is in the midst of an exciting new chapter in its design history. A new student centre designed by Rem Koolhaas and his Office for Metropolitan Architecture has once again put IIT at the forefront of the design world. Meanwhile, a new master plan for the campus, new landscaping, and a residence-hall complex by Helmut Jahn have reinvigorated student life and revitalized the surrounding community of Chicago's South Side. Featuring archival images of the Mies buildings as well as newly commissioned photographs of IIT's latest additions, this beautifully produced guide presents a comprehensive architectural walk through America's most distinguished modern campus.

Summary:
Today, R. M. Schindler's Kings Road House is celebrated as an icon of early modern architecture, but this wasn't the case when it was finished in 1922. Though Schindler and his wife Pauline recognized its genius early on, its radical appearance was - and remains - incomprehensible to many. This book is an incisive examination of the house, placing it in the context of the architect's career and clarifying its influence on modern architecture and its practitioners. Little-known aspects of Schindler's life, his relationship with his mentors, and the development of his unique theories about space enrich the narrative. Robert Sweeney focuses on the construction of the house and the people who lived, worked, and performed there, demonstrating the building's significance in the social history of Southern California. He includes new research on Schindler's educational and personal background in Vienna and a discussion of the critical influence of Pauline Schindler in formulating the social underpinnings of the house. Judith Sheine's essay places the house in the context of Schindler's career, in which it established the basis of the spatial development of his work. She also examines the influence of the house on the work of numerous architects from Frank Lloyd Wright to Frank Gehry.

Summary:
"You press the button, we do the rest." Kodak used this slogan in ads for the first box cameras, introduced by George Eastman in 1888. From then on, virtually anyone could take pictures--the snapshot was born!~Without exception, the amateur photos presented in "Snapshots: the eye of the century" capture what are essentially ordinary moments--yet every trace of banality disappears once they are removed from the context of personal biography. Sometimes the moment is right, and art just "happens," in the form of double or multiple exposures, slipped horizons, or curious details that enter the picture frame because the camera moved just as the shutter was released. Christian R. Skrein-Bumballa, an artist and a former professional photographer, has tracked down and collected thousands of these treasures, which can be viewed as part of our visual heritage. His impressive selection of photographs is here arranged thematically, and at its heart we find the essentials of the human condition: joy and pain, visualized in the decisive moment in which history stands still for a fraction of a second. Snapshots features the most aesthetically notable and otherwise curious photographs from the S.A.S. Snapshots Archiv Skrein, a collection of nearly one million snapshots from all over the world.

Summary:
"Mute icons" challenges fixed aesthetic notions of beauty in architecture as both, disciplinary discourse and a spatial practice within the public realm, by intersecting historic antecedents and present instances within contemporary projects wherein indeterminacy, monolithicity and defamiliarization play a speculative role in constructing withdrawn, irritant and yet engaging architectural images. No longer concerned with narrative excesses or with the "shock and awe" of sensation making; the mute icon becomes intriguing in its deceptive indifference towards context, perplexing in its unmitigated apathy towards the body. Object and building, absolute and unstable, anticipated and strange, manifest and withdrawn, such is the dichotomy of mute icons. Dwelling in the paradox between silence and sign and aiming to debunk a false dichotomy between critical discourse, a pursue of formal novelty and the attainment of social ethics, "Mute icons" reaffirms the cultural need and socio-political relevance of the architectural image, suggesting a much-needed resolution to the present but incorrect antagonism between formal innovation, social responsibility and economic austerity. Intersecting relevant historical antecedents and polemic theoretical speculations with original design concepts and provocative representations of P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S recent work, the book aspires to stimulate authentic speculations on the real.
