Celebrated in the 1930s, forgotten during the postwar period and now rediscovered, Piero Portaluppi (1888–1967) was a leading figure of 20th-century Italian architecture. Portaluppi designed the Italian Pavilion for the Universal Exposition in Barcelona in 1929; created numerous industrial buildings; was choice designer of residences for Milanese high society; and between 1956 and 1962 collaborated on architectural projects with Gio Ponti. Produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Piero Portaluppi, this monograph comprises an extensive photo album featuring new colour images of Portaluppi’s projects taken by the renowned photographer Ciro Frank Schiappa; three previously unpublished essays, illustrated with archival photos by Antonio Paoletti; documentation of architectural models; and items documenting his personal interests (cartoons, diagrams, sundials, postcards, newspaper cuttings). Rachel Whiteread (b. 1963) creates spare, poetic sculptures that challenge perceptions of the commonplace. Working from everyday domestic items, she casts - in rubber, concrete, plaster, and polyester resin - the negative spaces inside closets and underneath beds, sinks, bathtubs, and chairs. Now, in what may be her most personal project to date, the Turner Prize-winning artist has been commissioned by Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin to make two large-scale casts from distinct spaces in a London building that she recently purchased to become her home and studio. Although the building has a history as both a synagogue and a factory, it is a product of austere postwar architecture, lacking many of the traditional embellishments associated with such structures. This fully illustrated volume documents Whiteread's process as she creates casts from this religious-cum-industrial-cum-personal space, which blurs boundaries between the spiritual and secular, as well as the public and private.

At its core was a room given over to the Independent Group, the proto-Pop collective comprised of (at various stages) the theorists Reyner Banham and Lawrence Alloway, photographer Nigel Henderson and the artists Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, William Turnbull and John McHale. The Independent Group's room premiered works of Op art alongside film posters, collages, murals, films and a jukebox, and was Britain's introduction to the phenomenon later named Pop. The spiralbound catalogue for This Is Tomorrow was designed by Edward Wright and published by Lund Humphries; out of print since 1957, it has since become a much sought-after rarity and a classic of graphic design and postwar visual culture. This facsimile edition is published for the Whitechapel's 2010-11 reconstruction of the 1956 show.
