Summary:
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), founder of the Anthroposophical Society, was also active in the field of architecture and the arts. His designs for the two Goetheanum buildings at Dornach, near Basel, together with the many residential and functional buildings grouped around them have met with great admiration. In his architecture, Steiner sought to realize a form of building which would reflect his sense of spiritualism, and it is his unusual but innovative use of concrete and his expressive timber forms which are of interest to architects today. This book provides a long-awaited overview of the most significant and interesting buildings on the Goetheanum hill. Detail photographs and panoramas in duotone are accompanied by comments by Werner Blaser and an introduction by Walter Kugler, administrator of the Steiner estate.

Summary:
The work of the Austrian architectural office Delugan-Meissl has on the one hand a cosmpolitan flair, yet on the other it is marked by a decidedly urban and sustainable design philosophy. Evident in their striking projects are specific features running like leitmotif through their work: their distinctive use of the landscape and of previously undeveloped sites, their blending of urban and natural elements, and their perception of facades as space and surfaces to be utilised. The resulting designs are bold and dynamic with an unusually international touch for Vienna. This book consists of two volumes: one volume documents the fundamental concepts underlying their architecture, and the second volume presents 25 projects. The volumes are attached to each other and with the ingenious system of cross-referencing, enhanced by a precise and skilful graphic design, a web of meaning emerges which not only provides insight into the methodology of Delugan-Meissl but also gives an overview of their projects in town-planning, transport buildings, competitions and residential buildings. In contrast to most architecture monographs, this highly unusual book concept provides a visual expression of the two approaches to their work.

Summary:
In the twenty-first century, commerce and culture are ever more closely entwined. This new collection of essays by design critic Rick Poynor takes a searching look at visual culture to discover the reality beneath the ultra-seductive surfaces. Poynor explores the thinking behind the emerging resistance to commercial rhetoric among designers, and offers critical insights into the changing dialogue between advertising and design. Other essays address the topics of visual journalism; brands as religion; the new solipsism; graphic memes; the pleasures of imperfect design; and the poverty of “cool”. Around the world, many are now waking up to the dominance of huge corporations – invariably expressed by visual means. This pointed and provocative counterblast arrives at a moment when critical responses are vital if this mono-culture is to be challenged. It offers inspirational evidence of alternative ways of engaging with design, and it will appeal to any reader with a questioning interest in design, advertising, cultural studies, media studies, and the visual arts.

Summary:
In summer 2001, Potsdam, one of the world’s famous sites of classical garden design, with the beautiful grounds of the Sans Souci Palace, will be staging international contributions which respond to the tasks and challenges in contemporary landscape architecture. A large number of internationally known landscape architects, artists and architects have come together to cultivate 60 hectares of public park, to redesign urban spaces and other sites where historical townscapes and nature conjoin, to develop avant-garde artistic features, and to create the central spectacular exhibition space. This book will present the various parks and artistic interventions in their finished state, accompanied by lavish illustrations and descriptive texts, thus ensuring that the book remains topical thoughout the festival and will be an enduring documentation long after the doors have been closed and the new park with its array of leisure and recreational facitilities has been developed.
