Summary:
Thomas Demand’s photographic practice - the depiction of meticulously recreated life-size interiors and environments - takes on a new twist with this volume. The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles is home to the architectural maquettes of architect John Lautner, whose buildings are highlights of Californian architecture. Lautner’s space-age structures - such as the legendary “Chemosphere,” a four-bedroom house resembling a flying saucer, mounted atop a 20-foot concrete pillar - are particularly toy-like in their maquette versions, and for this project, Demand photographed 12 of these models in close-up detail. Model Studies includes more than 130 color images of Lautner’s models. With this volume, Demand, who has always been concerned with the intersections of art and architecture, now looks at the architect as sculptor, paying tribute to Lautner on the centenary of the architect’s birth.

On May 27, 1703, Tsar Peter the Great founded a new capital on a barren Baltic marsh. Modeled on Amsterdam, he believed it would erase Russian backwardness and usher in a modernized, Westernized future. In the nineteenth-century Age of Imperialism, the British rebuilt Bombay as a tropical London, while three Western powers made Shanghai look just like home. And in our own time, the sheikh of Dubai has endeavored to transform his desert city into a Vegas-esque skyscraper-studded global hub. The cultural and historical threads that connect these cities and their conflicted embrace of modernity are brought into relief in Daniel Brook’s captivating mix of history and reportage—a story of architects and authoritarians, artists and revolutionaries who take these facsimiles of the West and turn them into crucibles of non-Western modernity.

Summary:
Lafayette Park, an affordable middle-class residential area in downtown Detroit, is home to the largest collection of buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the world. Today, it is one of Detroit’s most racially integrated and economically stable neighborhoods, although it is surrounded by evidence of a city in financial distress. Through interviews with and essays by residents; reproductions of archival material; and new photographs by Karin Jobst, Vasco Roma, and Corine Vermeulen, and previously unpublished photographs by documentary filmmaker Janine Debanné, Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies examines the way that Lafayette Park residents confront and interact with this unique modernist environment. While there are many publications about abandoned buildings in Detroit and about the city’s prosperous past, this book is about a remarkable part of the city as it exists today, in the twenty-first century.

Summary:
In the years following the arrival of the Windrush generation, the UK’s soundsystem culture would become the most important influence on contemporary pop music since rock and roll. Pumped through towering, home-built speakers, often directly onto the thronged streets of events like the Notting Hill Carnival, the pulsating bass lines of reggae, dub, rave, jungle, trip hop, dubstep, and grime have shaped the worlds of several generations of British youth culture but have often been overlooked by historians obsessed with swinging London, punk, and Britpop. This oral history, consisting of new interviews conducted by dance music writer Joe Muggs, presents the story of the bassline of Britain, in the words of those who lived and shaped it. Features interviews with Dubmaster Dennis Bovell, Norman Jay MPE, Youth, Adrian Sherwood, Skream, Rinse FM’s Sarah Lockhart and many others.

In the late 1970s Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) was commissioned by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to create an artwork for the lobby of a new office building underway in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Kelly responded with one of his most ambitious artworks to date, ''Color Panels for a Large Wall,'' an 18-panel painting executed in two versions. The larger, at over 125 feet wide, was the biggest painting he had ever made, and its trajectory would pass through not just Cincinnati but also Amsterdam, New York and Munich before ending up at its permanent home, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, where it has been prominently installed in the I.M. Pei–designed East Building since 2004.The smaller version, over 30 feet wide, remained in the artist's possession. This catalog tells the complete story of these two remarkable paintings.

Summary:
In the 1920s, an unprecedented program of architectural and cultural renewal was established in the German city of Frankfurt am Main. This scheme became inscribed in cultural history under the name ''The New Frankfurt.'' As part of the housing and urban development initiative decided in 1925, more than 10,000 new residential units were planned. The Building Ministry’s architects, recruited from home and abroad, created pioneering work in many areas. Examples include the typification of family-oriented flats, plans for affordable apartments for those on low incomes, the first standard kitchen, the industrial prefabrication of building shells, the construction of schools designed around children’s needs, and integrated urban and green planning. In this book, four essays delve into the cultural background of the scheme and provide illuminating insights into the context of the work of its many actors.

Summary:
Things make us just as much as we make things. And yet, unlike the study of languages or places, there is no discipline devoted to the study of material things. This book shows why it is time to acknowledge and confront this neglect and how much we can learn from focusing our attention on stuff. It presents the theories that are required to understand the way we are created by material as well as social relations. It takes us inside the very private worlds of our home possessions and our processes of accommodating. It considers issues of materiality in relation to the media, as well as the implications of such an approach in relation, for example, to poverty. Finally, the book considers objects which we use to define what it is to be alive and how we use objects to cope with death.

Summary:
"Holiday Houses" is the new critical survey that projects archphoto2.0’s fourth issue as the most architectural one, without the interdisciplinary crossbreeding and political connotation that were ingredients of the previous issues. But thinking about this issue also means reflecting on the concept of holiday’s evolution now that one doesn’t need to own a holiday house and can very well use a rental house for this purpose. And not even any house at that, but the result of a project of education to modernity like the one developed by philosopher Alain de Botton who asked celebrated and less known architects to address the issue of home-living in different locations in Great Britain. An interesting project in its attempt to establish a “modern” collective conscience although conflicting in its fluctuating between vernacular cottages and more contemporary designs.

Summary:
On the rocky coast of the Côte d'Azur perches a crisp, white modern home, elongated and compact, cryptically called ''E.1027''. The Anglo-Irish designer Eileen Gray (1878–1976) bought the site, paid for the construction and designed the building (with the assistance of her close friend, Jean Badovici, to whom Gray gave the site, building and contents). It was Gray's first foray into architecture, and as such it was a manifesto. For Gray, the whole building—the structure, its materials, the color scheme, the windows, the hardware, the fittings, the furniture—was an experiment with new concepts of spatial relations, an attempt to create an architecture of lightness and freedom. This new publication finally places this key example of modern architecture in its rightful position in history, contextualizing the structure with essays, reproductions of archival material, photographs and numerous scale drawings.
