Summary:
“Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!” declared architect Walter Gropius in his Bauhaus manifesto. Founded in 1919 as an art school in Weimar, the Bauhaus established itself as a major influence on twentieth- century art and design. Bauhaus students were taught by some of the most celebrated artists of the time, including Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, and Wassily Kandinsky. Having moved to Berlin in 1932 under architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it was forced to close for good by the Gestapo in 1933. Uncovering the sources of inspiration that brought the Bauhaus into existence, from medieval cathedrals of Europe and Hokusai prints to William Morris and Arts and Crafts, The Spirit of the Bauhaus explores workshops and courses in detail, illustrating the extraordinary wealth of experimentation in every medium: ceramics, wood and metalwork, textiles, glass- painting, sculpture, mural, printing and binding, theater, architecture, and photography. This essential and accessible guide to the Bauhaus, published in time for the 100th anniversary of the school in 2019, celebrates a school that continues to be recognized as the most durable and influential source of modern ideas about art, design, and craft.

Summary:
'Craft Becomes Modern: The Bauhaus in the Making' looks at the Bauhaus from the perspective of this noisy activity — handcraft. No term was more fiercely disputed there. Although conceived as “laboratories for industry,” a great deal was still done by hand in the Dessau workshops. Workshops at the Bauhaus straddled the different priorities and practical realities at play, falling somewhere between factory and craft business, between free experimentation and industrial contract work. From this field of tension, the Bauhaus tried to define handcraft anew as a utopian pursuit that could coexist with industrial culture. The Bauhaus’ interest in industrialization has been thoroughly studied; the persistence of craft among its teachers and students much less so. Craft Becomes Modern surveys this aspect of the Bauhaus’ teaching and work, and puts it in historical context.

Summary:
Gyorgy Kepes (1906–2001) was the last disciple of Bauhaus modernism, an acolyte of László Moholy-Nagy and a self-styled revolutionary artist. But by midcentury, transplanted to America, Kepes found he was trapped in the military-industrial-aesthetic complex. In this first book-length study of Kepes, John Blakinger argues that Kepes, by opening the research laboratory to the arts, established a new paradigm for creative practice: the artist as technocrat. First at Chicago's New Bauhaus and then for many years at MIT, Kepes pioneered interdisciplinary collaboration between the arts and sciences- what he termed “interthinking” and “interseeing.” Kepes and his colleagues, ranging from metallurgists to mathematicians, became part of an important but little-explored constellation: the Cold War avant-garde.

Summary:
The student projects from the preliminary course at the Bauhaus Dessau School of Design are unique documents of a unique learning process. As students set to work independently translating the experimental assignments set by Bauhaus Masters like Josef Albers, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Gunta Stölzl, they produced a huge variety of interpretations. 'Design Rehearsals' invites international educators and designers to look at a selection of student works originating from different courses at the Bauhaus. Serving as public guest critics, the commentators critically examine the historical student works, considering their artistic and pedagogic relevance today.
