Based in Miami, Laurinda Spear is an architect, landscape architect, and co-founder of ArquitectonicaGEO, through which she explores sustainable design principles in landscape architecture, master planning, and urban design. ''Geo Bio Miami'' presents an overview of the various issues and topics addressed by her practice – green infrastructure, climate change, storm water management, etc. – and explores the value that landscape architecture brings to a project. Designed by Irma Boom, the book takes shape as a dense collage of projects, sketches, bright colours, and insightful analyses, and also includes an introduction by landscape architect Charles Birnbaum.

From private homes to shelters, markets and schools, opera houses to factories, museums to libraries, this book explores how architects of diverse backgrounds and cultures are tackling problems such as climate change, income inequality and declining resources by designing buildings that are as innovative as they are fascinating. The illustrations emphasize the design of the buildings in their surroundings and also show the people who live, work, or play there. In the U.S., more than 50% of the population inhabits coastal areas. In Planning for Coastal Resilience, Tim Beatley argues that, in the face of such threats, all future coastal planning and management must reflect a commitment to the concept of resilience. Coastal resilience must become the primary design and planning principle to guide all future development and all future infrastructure decisions.

Conversations with Paolo Soleri offers timely thinking in response to our global environmental crisis. Drawn from the visionary architect's personal notebooks and sketchbooks, Soleri's most recently (2004–2009) documented ideas respond to contemporary issues such as climate change, oil dependence, suburban sprawl, and overconsumption. Soleri outlines a detailed proposal for urban reformulation and renewal, appealing to architects, urban planners, environmentalists, urban historians, philosophers, ethicists, and anthropologists. Two essays and a new interview covering the breadth of Soleri's career round out this accessible introduction, offering a useful overview of Soleri's work.

Nature no longer exists apart from humanity. Henceforth, the world we will inhabit is the one we have made. Geologists have called this new planetary epoch the Anthropocene, the Age of Humans. The geological strata we are now creating record industrial emissions, industrial-scale crop pollens, and the disappearance of species driven to extinction. Climate change is planetary engineering without design. These facts of the Anthropocene are scientific, but its shape and meaning are questions for politics—a politics that does not yet exist. After Nature develops a politics for this post-natural world.

A complex bamboo pyramid to block a busy crossing in London. A maze of 'mini Stonehenge' brick structures to hinder government crackdowns in Hong Kong. The takeover of a Dallas highway to create a temporary public square. Architects have often used their skills in struggles for civil rights, gender equality and climate justice. Illuminating the role that design has played in protest movements, Nick Newman explores the colliding worlds of architecture and activism through the stories of those who have built for change. Using historic and contemporary examples, Protest Architecture analyses the design problems and solutions faced by protestors on the streets through detailed drawings, photography and expert insight. From beacons to barricades, towers to treehouses, this unique design typology demonstrates architectural influence over moments of societal change. This is a retelling of protest history through the eyes of an architect.

Summary:
This publication represents a quest for biodiversity in the city. Declining biodiversity in the countryside has been in the spotlight for years. How do you design a public space that is anchored in healthy soil? Without soil, we cannot survive. Yet we treat our living environment inattentively. The growing world population is moving to cities, annexing surrounding areas and literally squeezing the life out of the soil. The urban climate, urbanized environment and urban water balance are detrimental to healthy soil life. The (urban) soil is largely sealed off and this results in extreme flooding, heat and drought exhaustion, soil compaction and habitat fragmentation. The design of the city includes many underground measures. Every change leads to soil exhaustion. This has to change. This publication formulates measures and resulting details that will result in healthy soil life.

Summary:
"Inhabitable infrastructures: science fiction or urban future?", the follow up to "Food city and smartcities and eco-warriors", from one of the world’s leading urban design and architectural thinkers, explores the potential of climate change-related multi-use infrastructures that address the fundamental human requirements to protect, to provide and to participate. The stimulus for the infrastructures derives from postulated scenarios and processes gleaned from science fiction and futurology as well as the current body of scientific knowledge regarding changing environmental impacts on cities. Science fiction is interdisciplinary by nature, aggregates the past and present, and evaluates both lay opinions and professional strategies in an attempt to develop foresight and to map possible futures. The research culminates in the creation of innovative multi-use infrastructures and integrated self-sustaining support systems that meet the challenges posed through climate change and overpopulation, and the reciprocal benefits of simultaneously addressing the threat and the shaping of cities. J. G. Ballard has written that the psychological realm of science fiction is most valuable in its predictive function, and in projecting emotions into the future. The knowledge from the book is widely transferable, constituting both solutions and speculative visions of future urban environments. The book is indispensable reading for professionals and students in the fields of urban design, architecture, engineering and environmental socio-politics.

Summary:
As climate change accelerates and urbanization intensifies, our need for more sustainable and livable cities has never been more urgent. Yet, the imaginary of a flourishing urban ecofuture is often driven by a specific version of sustainability that is tied to both high-tech futurism and persistent economic growth. What kinds of sustainable futures are we calling forth, and at what and whose expense? In "Reimagining the more-than-human city," Jamie Wang attempts to answer these questions by critically examining the sociocultural, political, ethical, and affective facets of human-environment dynamics in the urban nexus, with a geographic focus on Singapore.

Summary:
In the context of massive and accelerating change- in technology, science, climate, and society- the nature of architectural design is also evolving and coming to life in new ways. New York-based office The Living has developed a unique design approach that explores projects through the application of new technologies, materials, and the growing field of generative design (design that uses software to emulate nature's evolutionary processes). These methods are futuristic, even utopian, but also raw and immediate in their application of hands-on prototyping and testing through making. The Living addresses urgent issues through reframing design with today's tools.
