Summary:
Cell phones and E-mail, home shopping and the Internet - "old" industrial societies have been turning into globally connected information societies on the sly. At the same time, the population is tending to retreat into its own four walls. Yet - or maybe for this reason - public urban spaces are becoming more and more important, having lost none of their significance as interfaces of human communication. This catalogue is published in conjunction with the thirtieth anniversary of the Bremen program for public art. It features over thirty artists who have confronted urban and social aspects of the city and developed their own personal visions, utopias and fantasies of a life in and with the city. Artists featured: Kim Adams, Louise Bourgeois, Stephen Craig, Bogomir Ecker, Olafur Eliasson, Ayse Erkmen, Isa Genzken, Dorothee Golz, Wiebke Grösch/Frank Metzger, Hans Haacke, Rudolf Herz, Stephan Huber, Rolf Julius, Emilia und Ilya Kabakov, Andree Korpys/Markus Löffler, Mischa Kuball, Atelier Van Lieshout, M+M, Joachim Manz, Olaf Nicolai, Julian Opie, Panamarenko, Hermann Pitz, Marjetica Potrc, Tobias Rehberger, Thomas Ruff/Florian Baudrexel/Jens Ullrich, Roman Signer, Bert Theis, herman de vries, Wolfgang Winter/Berthold Hörbelt

Summary:
Divided into three sections, "The Smart House" illustrates how technology is changing our homes. The book looks at three areas: Smart Technology, which examines five aspects of technology and how it's being integrated throughout the house: lighting design and window treatments; audio and video entertainment; voice and data management; security and access; and environmental controls and energy management. Smart Materials, which shows new building materials such as titanium, electronic glass that can become transparent or opaque at the flick of a switch, polycarbonate materials, laser-perforated metals, all of which are changing the way homes are built and the ways in which we use and perceive spaces within these structures. Smart Design looks at more extravagant innovations such as swimming pools cantilevered in mid-air, windows that recreate digital views at night, interior spaces whose functions are transformed through architectural slight of hand and computer aided design, all of which point to new ways of thinking about how we live and how we use space in this increasingly space-challenged world. Case studies of ten recently constructed homes are detailed to illustrate each aspect of this technology and to show the full potential technology affords modern home design.

Summary:
For 20 years, Giuliana Michelotti has designed fashion, objects and jewelry of uncommon organic sensuality in collaboration with such leading firms as Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Christian Lacroix. Always a passionate and inquisitive traveler, Michelotti has been as influenced by the tribal and ethnic traditions of Asia and Africa as the contemporary trends of her native Italy or current home, New York City. In 1995 Michelotti launched her own line of jewelry inspired by nature and the sea. All of the pieces in the GM collection are cast in silver using an ancient Indian “lost wax” technique. The stones are uncut and natural, worn by rain and sand. Shells and madrepores eroded by waves, corals ramified in infinite ways, sticks and small rocks--in Michelotti’s hands, these humble organic materials are transformed into necklaces, bracelets and earrings of such highly refined shape and physical lightness that one cannot mistake them for anyone else’s work. With an essay by The New York Times’ revered style editor, Stefano Tonchi, this volume features exquisite close-up photographs of Michelotti’s jewelry, and details the life and creative path of an artist who has achieved an extraordinarily sophisticated aesthetic synthesis

Summary:
Cities are birthplaces of civilization; centers of culture, trade, and progress; cauldrons of opportunity—and the home of eighty percent of the world’s population by 2050. As the 21st century progresses, metropolitan areas will bear the brunt of global megatrends such as climate change, natural resource depletion, population growth, income inequality, mass migrations, education and health disparities, among many others. In The Well-Tempered City, Jonathan F. P. Rose—the man who “repairs the fabric of cities”—distills a lifetime of interdisciplinary research and firsthand experience into a five-pronged model for how to design and reshape our cities with the goal of equalizing their landscape of opportunity. Drawing from the musical concept of “temperament” as a way to achieve harmony, Rose argues that well-tempered cities can be infused with systems that bend the arc of their development toward equality, resilience, adaptability, well-being, and the ever-unfolding harmony between civilization and nature. These goals may never be fully achieved, but our cities will be richer and happier if we aspire to them, and if we infuse our every plan and constructive step with this intention.

Summary:
Frank Lloyd Wright’s wife, Olgivanna, is famously quoted as saying that "My husband seemed to thrive on hardships." From the years 1920 to 1932 Wright’s fortunes were at a low ebb; he was plagued by financial, personal, and professional setbacks, but saw the time as one of challenges instead of one of defeat. Unable to find patrons, his imagination led to visionary, often splendid, architectural conceptions that laid the groundwork for the revolutionary architecture he would build in the decades to follow. During this period he designed almost fifty projects, of which only a few were realized, but those few are seen today as among his most important creations. They include the majestic Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, four exquisite textured concrete block houses in Los Angeles, renovations and additions to his beloved home, Taliesin, in Wisconsin, the Octillo Desert Camp in Chandler, Arizona, and his work as design consultant for the lavish Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Cottages in the desert in Phoenix. Rare and unseen photos as well as little-known drawings from this period are on lavish display in this important work on the master architect.

Summary:
Tomi Ungerer, illustrator of Jeff Brown's original Flat Stanley and winner of the prestigious 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator Award, paints the man in the moon as a benevolent, soft-bodied man who curls up in "his shimmering seat in space." Most evenings, he looks over longingly at the happy, dancing earth people, until one night when he can't resist catching the fiery tail of a comet and hitching a ride to Earth. Ungerer, ever satirical, reports the resulting frenzy of authorities upon hearing the crash landing: "The noise brought hundreds of people from a nearby town. Soldiers sped to defend the earth. Firemen hastened to quench the flaming light. The ice cream man hurried to set up his stand for the spectators." Of course, when the crowd discovers the unidentified fallen object, "statesmen, scientists, and generals panicked." Moon Man is thrown in jail, facing criminal investigation! How will he ever return to his lunar dwelling? Kids will love this quirky "there's no place like home" tale, and Ungerer's gentle, funny mocking of "important people" won't be lost on anyone. Summary:
In this first critical history of the National Gallery of Canada, Douglas Ord explores how, in the gallery's development, art has consistently been linked to notions of religious truth, national spirit, and hallowed atmosphere, culminating in Moshe Safdie's design for the institution's current building. Integrating accounts of political intrigue and public controversy with philosophy, art theory, and architectural analysis, Ord provides vivid accounts of successive directors' struggles to obtain a permanent home for the nation's art. Ord looks at the gallery's historical and intellectual context - from 1910 when Eric Brown became the gallery's founding director, through Jean Sutherland Boggs, to Shirley Thomson - shedding light on its acquisitions, government policy towards the arts, and the public's deep-rooted suspicion of avant-garde art. In showing how Canadian art came to be housed in a building whose architectural and ideological sources include Gothic cathedrals, Islamic mosques, Egyptian temples, St Peter's Basilica, and the squared-stone facades of the Holy City of Jerusalem, The National Gallery of Canada insightfully explores the relationship of Canada's art and its National Gallery to the project of the Canadian nation state.

Summary:
Reaching an apogee of 6,000 members in the years just before the Civil War, the Shaker movement was the most extensive, enduring, and successful utopian society ever established in America. Leaving Manchester, England, in 1776 to avoid persecution, the Shakers crossed the Atlantic and during the next 50 years established 19 villages from Maine to Kentucky. The Shakers were guided by the principles of utility, honesty, and order in both their work and worship, and this belief system influenced the physical expression of the goods they produced for use at home and for sale outside their communities. This lovely book presents a wide array of extraordinarily fine examples of Shaker furniture, household objects, textiles, religious drawings, and items made to sell to the “world’s people” (non-Shakers). The book’s expert contributors discuss Shaker design in relation to the furniture they constructed, the products they sold, their gift drawings and spirituality, and their rejection of American Fancy design. The book also considers the powerful inspiration Shaker design has provided for diverse modern and contemporary designers, including George Nakashima, Roy McMakin, Thomas Moser, and Scandinavian furniture makers.

Summary:
While birth often brings great joy, making babies is a knotty enterprise. The designed objects that surround us when it comes to menstruation, birth control, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood vary as oddly, messily, and dramatically as the stereotypes suggest. This smart, image-rich, fashion-forward, and design-driven book explores more than eighty designs--iconic, conceptual, archaic, titillating, emotionally charged, or just plain strange--that have defined the relationships between people and babies during the past century. Each object tells a story. "Designing motherhood" unfolds the compelling design histories and real-world uses of the objects that shape our reproductive experiences. The authors investigate the baby carrier, from the Snugli to BabyBjörn, and the (re)discovery of the varied traditions of baby wearing; the tie-waist skirt, famously worn by a pregnant Lucille Ball on I Love Lucy, and essential for camouflaging and slowly normalizing a public pregnancy; the home pregnancy kit, and its threat to the authority of male gynecologists; and more. Memorable images--including historical ads, found photos, and drawings--illustrate the crucial role design and material culture plays throughout the arc of human reproduction.
