Summary:
A protocol drawn up long ago in 1945 by Otto Koenigsberger, adopted in nearly one hundred instances in India and in more than half the world, provides the framework and rules for the planning of the prototypes of planned cities, and tells us that the so-called "participative architecture" aimed at intercultural inclusion, originated in the post-colonial territories between India and Africa. The catalogue, the fruition of a 5-year long Italian-Indian research, illustrates the consequences of democratic choice in independent India, its factual existence and its globalized outcomes, present even today. Presented in the installation, are four examples of Democratic New Towns – Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar, Faridabad and Chandigarh- outcomes of the interface between the experiences of Frey, Drew and Le Corbusier and the ideas of their Indian counterparts, Varma, Doshi, Correa, Rewal. The cities are analytically described and documented through photographs of their present condition, preserved as the modern protected areas in Europe.

Summary:
"The Portfolio and the Diagram" is about the changing ways architects see, read, and use the words and images of architectural publications. It begins with an outline of the academic discipline and the mimetic practice of the portfolio, established in America during the late nineteenth century. World War I triggered a historical process that resulted in the demise of the portfolio and the emergence of the discourse of the diagram. The Beaux Arts-trained architects had fashioned their discipline through the meticulous object-centered images of the portfolio. The discourse of the diagram provided a new range of possibility in the architect’s relation to words, images, and buildings. More than the diagram itself, more than the province of narrow-minded functionalists, the discourse of the diagram is a complex formation of texts, concepts, and modes of representation. Concerned less with constructing a new kind of modernism than with understanding the boundaries and structures of modernity, the book is a history of modern architecture as a discursive practice and its striving to become a viable discipline.

With an unprecedented focus on the architect’s own writings, library, and critical reception, the author proposes a dramatically different interpretation of Aalto’s oeuvre, revealing it as a deeply thoughtful response to his intellectual and cultural milieu—especially to Finland’s dynamic political circumstances following independence from Russia in 1917.

This publication presents legendary American photographer Berenice Abbott's work in three categories: her portraits, photographs of the city and scientific photographs. The opening section presents Abbott's portraits of mold-breaking individuals who changed the world from the mid-1920s onward such as Djuna Barnes, the New Yorker's Janet Flanner, Jean Cocteau and James Joyce. The second part offers a portrait of New York which takes into account Abbott's relations with and her fascination for the work of Eugène Atget by including an introductory group of his photographs, which she printed from his negatives. The third and final section focuses on Abbott's scientific photographs, which she started to produce in the late 1940s.

Summary:
The Fragile Monument is a study of the discourse of conservation and its effect on the notion and role of the monument in contemporary western society. Through a revisionist account of the history of conservation, the book explores how the monument has been transformed from an object that originally communicated permanence to an object that is perceived as fragile and in need of protection. The argument put forward is that the expansion and popularisation of conservation is bound to a narrative of loss and danger that reveals a paradoxical relationship between destruction and preservation. In a series of case-studies the book shows how spatial devices have been used to negotiate this paradox and how this use of space has contributed to the defining of the monument as an object of conservation.
