Summary:
Following the invention of the daguerreotype and calotype processes in 1839, views of ruins, classical statuary, and the antiquities of the Mediterranean and the Orient were among the first images produced by pioneer photographers. The unique accuracy and immediacy of photographs fundamentally changed aesthetic and scholarly approaches to the artifacts of the past. This book, published to coincide with the inaugural exhibition at the Getty villa, explores the intellectual underpinnings of the relationship between antiquity and photography in the period 1840-1880. Drawing on the extensive collections of the Getty museum and the Getty research institute, this illustrated volume presents an introduction to the subject, followed by a detailed discussion of the influence of photography on archaeology, by an analysis of the ways antiquity is depicted, and by biographical studies of two major photographers, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey and William James Stillman. Portfolios of works by Maxime Du Camp, John B. Greene, Francis Frith, Robert Macpherson, Adolphe Braun, and others appear between the essays.

Summary:
Photographic images can, apart from their capacity to show, convey an experience, a quality that has seldom been recognized. In this book, the artist and photographer Maarten Vanvolsem explains how the strip technique can tell a different story of time and space in photographic images, a story that leads to new expressions and experiences of time and movement. The strip technique itself seems to be neglected in the debate on time and photography, although it has a long history — from Muybridge to the photo booth. Its use is widespread and, especially in recent years, more and more artists have rediscovered the technique. Based on an historical overview, a knowledge and understanding of the technique, and experiments with the building of cameras, this book will propose a new use of this forgotten art: a use in which the temporal terms "speed," “rhythm,” and “pace” are of more value than terms so often associated with photography such as “freeze,” “split second,” or “capture.” Within the book one can find more than thirty artists using the strip technique for their artistic practice. Vanvolsem shows how the technique may be used to rediscover the time-based possibilities of the photographic image.

The now-legendary 1975 New Topographics show represented a true "seismic shift" in American landscape photography, moving past the romantic legacy of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston to the minimalist-influenced work typified by Lewis Baltz and Joe Deal. This catalog of 2011's Seismic Shift exhibition offers a comprehensive narrative of California photographic history made by the 43 featured artists; it includes 58 reproductions (mostly black-and-white) and essays by curator Colin Westerbeck, photographic historian Susan Laxton and regionalist Jason Weems. The exhibition is one of over 60 funded by the Getty Research Institute's initiative looking at Southern California art 1945-1980, called Pacific Standard Time.

Summary:
Decades following the rise of computer aided design and the aesthetic-theoretical debates that coincided, it might seem late, at this point, to place a spotlight on photography. After all, hardly anyone defends photography’s loyalty to the analog index anymore, or mourns the medium specificities of centuries past. And yet, who can dispute that the photograph has become the primary base for establishing identity now, for cohering a social body; one that, as the substrate across which today’s human subject is drawn, stands as, in a sense, our material support? As the image’s gaze has become omnipresent, it is perhaps prime time to ask how do we now understand photo-media to operate? What information do we expect it to carry? What facts do we trust it to convey?
