Summary:
In the years around 1960, a rapid process of deindustrialization profoundly changed New York City. At the same time, massive highway construction, urban housing renewal, and the growth of the financial sector altered the city’s landscape. As the new economy took shape, manufacturing lofts, piers, and small shops were replaced by sleek high-rise housing blocks and office towers. Focusing on works by Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Donald Judd, art historian Joshua Shannon shows how New York art engaged with this transformation of the city.

Summary:
This little book paints a portrait of BAST, an acronym for "Bureau d'Architecture Sans Titre" (Untitled Architecture Office), through 20 identical questions asked to 20 people selected from among the clients, service providers and collaborators of the Toulouse-based agency. Through the answers, sometimes terse, sometimes prolix, grouped together and organised according to a simple principle (one page, one answer), a profile of the agency emerges: positioning, method, qualities, faults... which allows us to better understand its approach, but also the environment and the crisis era in which it is embedded.

They force us to reflect on the paradoxes of openness and isolation, of enclosure and exclusion. In a world drowning in borders, barriers and barbed-wire fences, this issue of MacGuffin pauses for thought and asks: What exactly do we want to express or protect? And why?

An example of the rehabilitation of disused buildings – Ortner & Ortner´s transformation of an industrial area in Zurich. The “Schiffbau” in Zurich is a disused industrial ship-building hall, now classified as a historical monument. Austrian architects Ortner & Ortner have skilfully transformed the original building to provide a base for the Zurich Schauspielhaus theatre, and to accommodate a range of cultural amenities. This publication chronicles the architectural processes whilst also considering the wider issues of transforming existing structures to take on new urban uses. Isued by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.
