Mecanoo’s founder and creative director, Francine Houben, believes that public buildings are the social and cultural heart of society and states: “Public buildings need public space and should be welcoming to everybody.” The prime example of this vision is the Library of Birmingham, one of the largest libraries in Europe at the city’s main Centenary Square. Mecanoo aimed to design a building that is inviting welcoming and inspiring for people of all ages and backgrounds - a real public building that also creates an outdoor public space. Through the ages, libraries have not only accumulated and preserved but also shaped, inspired, and obliterated knowledge. Now they are in crisis. Former rare books librarian and Harvard MetaLAB visionary Matthew Battles takes us from Boston to Baghdad, from classical scriptoria to medieval monasteries and on to the Information Age, to explore how libraries are built and how they are destroyed: from the scroll burnings in ancient China to the burning of libraries in Europe and Bosnia to the latest revolutionary upheavals of the digital age. A new epilogue elucidates the preservation of knowledge amid the creative destruction of twenty-first century technology. 10 illustrations.

Summary:
What is density? This question is the starting point of an investigation into the nature of density in the contemporary urban environment. In analysing projects located throughout Europe, the research proposes that density is not about volumetric exploitation, but based on the interaction between three elements: agents, fluxes, and territory. This book documents the findings, detailing individual buildings, cataloguing specific urban forms, and drawing conclusions as to performance and quality, also in an ecological sense. It also offers a case study concerning the former site of the Renault factory in Paris, examining how an experimental opportunity can lead to a vibrant piece of city.

Summary:
Throughout the modern era, photography has been enlisted not only to document but also to classify the world and its people. Its status bolstered by a popular belief in the scientific objectivity of photographic evidence, photography has been used, from the earliest days of the medium, to produce and organize knowledge about the external world. Published to accompany the exhibition The Order of Things: Photography from The Walther Collection, this catalogue investigates the production and uses of serial portraiture, vernacular imagery, architectural surveys and time-based performance in photography from the 1880s to the present, bringing together works by artists from Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.
