Summary:
De Lucchi (Ferrara 1951) was a protagonist of 'Radical Architecture', and also of the Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis movements. He has designed industrial objects for companies that are household words, such as Artemide, Kartell, Matsuhita, Mauser, Poltrona Frau and Olivetti; and buildings and interiors for clients like Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Bundesbahn, Enel, Poste Italiane and Telecom Italia. In 1990 he founded Produzione Privata, an enterprise with an artisanal slant where he creates prototypes for industrial objects in limited editions by constantly drawing on Italy's skilled craft tradition. He also lectures at the IUAV University in Venice. This volume analyzes De Lucchi's works and his ideas on, among other things, the evolution of the workplace and of the objects that make up the varied landscape of advanced societies. The monograph is introduced by an essay that places De Lucchi's multifaceted work in perspective - from his debut as an artist at the beginning of the 1970s to his recent 'service design' - and includes detailed descriptions of a wide range of his major projects, a complete list of all his works, a bibliography and a selection of his writings.

Summary:
For a while now the "Young British Artists" have been soaking up the international limelight thanks to a sensibility that is at once outrageous and thoughtful. Architecture, of course, always takes a while to catch up to the other arts, but now, finally, Britain has emerged as one of the world's most fertile breeding grounds for international design talent. Catalyzed by such leading international architecture schools as the Architectural Association and the Bartlett, a new wave of architects, from home and abroad, is combining local and global styles in exciting new buildings and projects. Post-Imperial British designers are indeed synthesizing foreign cultures with Western conditions in an entirely original way. Profiling Britain's most dynamic and intriguing practices, ‘British Built’ features projects by S333, Caruso St John, Alison Brooks, Foreign Office Architects (FOA), muf, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Gollifer Langston, de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM), Kathryn Findlay, FAT, Adjaye Associates, Sergison Bates, Klein Dytham Architects (KDa), and Deborah Saunt David Hills Architects. "British Built", the sequel to our successful "SuperDutch", includes studio profiles and essays outlining the unique characteristics of the British architect working today and presenting an even younger generation of architects whose stars are only just appearing on the horizon, including atopia, softroom, dECOi, and Tonkin Liu, among many others. Previously priced at $60.00.

Summary:
Walking into a space designed by David Rockwell is like walking into another world. He and his New York firm Rockwell Group create public spaces that aim straight for our infatuation with escapism. Whether it's the four-star restaurant Nobu; the hip boutique hotel W; or the boisterous Mohegan casino, theirs is an architecture that uses immersion as a tool to transport us away from ordinary environments. The work of Rockwell Group stands out among that of other modern masters for its undiluted populism and immediate gratification. Pleasure is the first book to examine the theaters, hotels, stadiums, restaurants, casinos, and other public spaces across the country that have positioned Rockwell Group as one of America's most powerful firms. With provocative analysis from the most notable educators, artists, critics, and design tastemakers of our day, the book is a riveting re-working of the traditional architectural monograph format. Pleasure will appeal not just to architects and designers of all types, but also to the wide spectrum of people who are seduced by the destination spaces it creates.

His Fred-and-Ginger nightclubs and glinting-steel-and-blazing-neon circular drive-ins brought Hollywood to life. His Sands Hotel in Las Vegas became the home of the Rat Pack; the mythology of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. owes a great deal to the swank glamour of the Copa Room and the Sands Hotel, one of McAllister's finest.

Summary:
At the turn of the last century, the Arts and Crafts movement transformed not only how objects looked but also how people looked at objects. It provided a framework for essential issues that are still debated today: the conflict between standardization and individuality, the question of whether a one-of-a-kind handcrafted object is superior to a mass-produced one, and the problem of defining what kind of design most benefits society. The book features masterworks by the best-known designers of the period, such as William Morris, M. H. Baillie Scott, Henry Van de Velde, Peter Behrens, Josef Hoffmann, Eliel Saarinen, Greene and Greene, and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as lesser-known examples that have never been displayed together before.

Summary:
cube. It's one of nature's purest, most basic forms. We see cubes every day, usually made of elemental materials like sugar and ice. But what if the cube is something altogether more complicated? What happens when cubes are constructed of plywood and bamboo, foam and hay, chopped up telephone books and strands of chicken wire? Cube is a speculative investigation of this primal shape, a tactile exploration of the imagination in which unexpected materials create surprisingly beautiful and intriguing objects. Imagine you're asked to create something interesting out of this simplest of forms using whatever materials you can find at hand. That's the design exercise architect David Morrow Guthrie gives his students each year at Rice University, and the results, over 50 of which are presented in this handy little block of a book, will inspire any designer who is looking for ideas and inspiration, whether from elemental forms or innovative ways of using materials.
