Summary:
Based on the exhibition "The Idea of Building" held at Matthew Marks Gallery, New York in October 2020 and now published in an edition of only 500 copies by Pre-Echo Press, this book features some of the Luigi Ghirri’s most iconic photographs alongside previously unseen works selected by the artist Matt Connors from the Archivio Luigi Ghirri in Reggio Emilia. "To me, as a painter, the photographs of Luigi Ghirri are built rather than composed, things rather than images. The Italian phrase for taking a photo, fare una foto, literally means 'to make a photo,' and this feels like some kind of key. Trained as a land surveyor and a draftsman, Ghirri perceived the world — and all of reality — as a terrain, an assembly of signs, symbols, and images, including other photographs. Taking all of this as his raw material, he re-assembled and re-deployed it, reading the physical world but also writing it."

Summary:
Published for the first time in English, 'The Complete Essays 1973–1991' comprises sixty-eight texts in which Luigi Ghirri explores the same subjects at the core of his photographs – the themes of identity, time, memory, vision, representation, and sense of place. As a voracious reader with a particular taste for the eclectic, Ghirri also reaches outwards from his own practice to explore the history of photography as he considers the work of Walker Evans, William Eggleston, Robert Adams and John Gossage, weaving in references to musicians, writers and painters alike. As themes and ideas overlap, the compilation of texts create a sort of dialectic chamber of curiosities that includes Gulliver, Van Gogh’s yellow house, Cézanne, Morandi’s studio, Mallarmé, the fireworks above Trani Cathedral, neo-realist films, lots of music, Francis Bacon, McLuhan’s global village, Pessoa, poetry. Together, the essays offer an unintentional yet comprehensive treatise on the history and theory of photography, and above all, they constitute a special form of autobiography.

Summary:

Summary:
This volume offers a brilliant account of Luigi Ghirri’s relationship with Puglia — a distinctive region at the heel of Italy, which was pivotal in establishing Ghirri’s career and continued to inspire him throughout it. A first visit in 1982 introduced Ghirri to Puglia’s whitewashed streets, luminescent nights, doorways, funfairs, and beaches, as well as a group of friends and collaborators. Over the following decade, he returned to the area almost every year, deepening his understanding of its subtle terrain. These photographs, almost all of which are little-known and previously unpublished, capture the textures and rhythms of daily life, delighting in tactile detail, visual coincidence, and the ebb and flow of time on an intimate scale.

Summary:
Through the course of the 1970s and 1980s, Luigi Ghirri pursued his extraordinary project, open-ended and mercurial, marked by empathy for the changing everyday spaces of his time. Over the course of his short career, Ghirri would produce a vast body of photographs without parallel in the Europe of his time and numerous writings which would have an indelible impact on the history of photography. The focus of the project is on Ghirri’s quietly compelling project to create a new kind of geography, located in his fascination with representations of the world, in the form of reproductions, pictures, posters, models and maps.

Among the many recurring interests that connect the rich and open-ended oeuvre of Luigi Ghirri, a fascination with travel resonates through his photographs, publications, and writings. This book by curator James Lingwood charts a course through Ghirri’s photography between 1970 and 1991, exploring the manifold ways in which journeys – viaggi – appear: in iconic landscapes in the Dolomites and the lakes of northern Italy; in the mirror-worlds of seaside resorts along the Adriatic and Mediterranean; among museums, archaeological sites, and theme parks; inside atlases and on postcards; and along his own bookshelves, with their evocative titles and mementoes. This vividly curated book maps a route through Ghirri’s work that takes in familiar landmarks and surprising detours, interleaving many of his best loved photographs with unseen discoveries from the Ghirri archive.

Summary:
Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri (1943–92) made ''Cardboard landscapes'' (''Paesaggi di cartone'') during his travels around Europe, coining the term 'sentimental geography' to describe his unique artistic approach of examining the ordinary to prove it remarkable. The original handmade album features over 100 chromogenic colour prints pasted onto the pages of a blank book, and was gifted by Ghirri to John Szarkowski, then the Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, in the 1970s. A singular work of art, ''Cardboard landscapes'' is now being published for the first time. The collection is an anomaly within Ghirri’s overall oeuvre, as it prioritizes complex composition rather than the sweeping tableaux for which he is best known. In this series of works, he regards the printed image as the subject, framing a kaleidoscope of photographs and advertisements to tell a poetic visual narrative that reflects at once regional, personal and popular culture, revealing a fascinating impulse to investigate his role within his own medium.
