Photographed in the higher elevations of these different mountain ranges, the subjects are stark and desolate, at once forbidding, alien, and sublime. The sweeping, panoramic vistas of peaks, snowy landscapes, and rock-strewn slopes fill page after page, a formidable portrait of the grandiose power and limitless scale of geological time. With graphic design by Julien Hourcade.

Summary:
Marking the first museum exhibition devoted solely to the photographs of Ellsworth Kelly, this volume features each photograph in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s illuminating presentation of this lesser-known aspect of Kelly’s art. From the late 1940s on, Kelly created an era-defining body of abstract art based on many kinds of visual phenomena he perceived around him. Largely made for himself, Kelly’s photographs record these discoveries in tightly-composed images of nature and architecture that often reverberate with striking sunlight and shadow. Similar as they may appear, Kelly did not base his paintings, sculpture and works on paper on his photographs. The camera for Kelly was yet one more artistic tool he used to brilliantly transcribe his lived surroundings into an art that, however abstract, always resonated with his subjective experiences of actual, everyday worlds. Kelly’s rich sensory fascination with such worlds, from shadows on a beachside staircase to the curve of a snowy hillside, courses throughout this handsome book. To those familiar with or new to the artist, these photographs offer a vividly direct chance to see Ellsworth Kelly’s eye and mind at work unlike any other genre in which this groundbreaking artist ever worked.

Summary:
Often out of print, this new edition of Joel Sternfeld’s seminal book returns to the format of the original 1987 edition. All of the now classic images within it—alongside a group of never published photographs—examine a once pristine land stewarded by indigenous peoples who needed no lessons in stewardship, and a land now occupied by a mix of peoples hoping for salvation within the fraught paths of late capitalism. The result suggests a vast nation whose prospects have much to do with global prospects, a “teenager of the world” unaware of its strengths, filled with idealism and frequent failings.

''In 1991, I moved to Berlin for four years. The Berlin wall had just fallen but you could still see sections of it, and certainly still feel the divide between the Capitalist and Socialist states. Discovering Central Europe meant learning about some very dark history. The scars of Totalitarianism were deep, visible and raw from both the Cold War and the preceding Second World War. These photographs were taken in Montreal during the Fall and Winter of 2013/14. I wanted to find a common visual ground where, through historical images we've all seen, my memories could be shared. I revisited these memories influenced by the political climate and my fear of a rising wave of militant nationalism and the return of the Police State. This work reflects some of my concerns through the evoking of personal and collective memories and the linking of present with past, and local to global.'' Eric Tschaeppeler

Summary:
Siri Ekker Svendsen’s ''All the whisperings of the world'' is a photo book examining the visual connections between nature’s vulnerability and the effects of an allergic shock to the body. To accomplish this, the artist takes us on a journey to contemporary rainforest areas in South America. The locus of this process is the Brazil nut. The book weaves macro and micro perspectives with Svendsen’s classic black and white photographs, revealing the human body within a diverse ecosystem of complex interdependency. Images via microscope — body cells that have been destroyed due to allergic reactions — lead to images from scientific research on the body, flora, and fauna. A fragile connection is visualized, creating space to contemplate, fear, and grieve — ''All the whisperings of the world'' is an elegiac yearning for the loss of diversity in nature, which we see is also our own habitat.

Summary:
Sarah Malakoff’s large-scale color photographs investigate domestic interiors as both a refuge from and a re-creation of the outside world. In ''Personal History'', she turns her attention to objects displayed within American homes that reference culture, history, and ideology. Whether representations of historical figures, events, or monuments, the possessions point to a longing for connection to the past and an engagement with the world at large. Often the collections of objects underscore the privilege and power implicit in the act of collecting. These souvenirs resonate—sometimes humorously, sometimes disturbingly—with the other possessions and architecture that surround them, uneasily vacillating between heroism and kitsch, patriotism and colonialism.
