Description:
This project series documents the Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques, in Porto, also referred to as Avenida da Ponte I. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 31/60. In the past the office identified the project as number 121. The office assigned the dates 1968-1974 for this project. The Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques consisted of a building with offices, stores, and parking. Located on a historic site, the intention for the Edifício de Escritórios was to integrate the building into the existing urban landscape. The building was never realized. This project was done in relation to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Afonso Henriques, which was an urban renewal program in Porto. In the 1940s, waves of demolition in the old town created a rupture with the remaining buildings, including the Porto Cathedral. Since the 1950s, there have been several studies and proposals to revitalize this part of the city. Siza’s plan was the first to be accepted by the city council in 1968. Please see project series AP178.S1.1968.PR03, also described in this fonds, for further documentation. Siza also proposed a new design in 2001 for the site across the avenue from this one, known as Avenida da Ponte II. This included a museum, library, stores, parking, and houses. This project related to the building Casa Dos 24 Fernando Távora. The scheme was not realized. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, profiles, elevations, sections, cadastral maps and working details. Photographic materials document the model, site and residents of the neighborhood. Textual materials include project documentation, as well as correspondence with the city of Porto and suppliers. Note that materials related to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Afonso Henriques (project series AP178.S1.1968.PR03 in this fonds) are also found among these materials.

Description:
This project series documents a competition for the Ciudad del Flamenco de Jerez de la Frontera in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 56/00. The office assigned the date 2002 to this project. The competition for the Ciudad del Flamenco was part of an urban revitalization project for the historic center of Jerez. The competition was organized by the Ayuntamiento de Jerez. Six proposals were presented to the jury, including a design by Àlvaro Siza and Juan Miguel Hernández León. The project included the design of an auditorium, a museum, a documentation and research center, a school, and communal spaces. The buildings were to host The National Auditorium of Flamenco Art, the Museum and the Center for Investigation, and Documentation of the Art of Flamenco (CIDAF). The proposal was "a complex of prisms and courtyards wisely articulated between one another, rounded off by a sculptural trapezoidal and cantilevering piece'' (http://ciudaddelflamenco.jerez.es/flash/concurso.pdf p. 6). Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron's proposal won the competition. Documenting this project are studies, competition drawings, and plans. Textual documentation includes correspondence with the client and competition documentation.

Description:
This project series documents the Piscina de Marés in Leça da Palmeira, Matosinhos, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 9/60. The office assigned the date 1961. Piscina de Marés was built between 1961 and 1966. The project included two salt water pools, one for adults and another for children, and changing rooms. A restaurant was later added in 1965. The pools were embedded in rock formations situated on the northern coastline of the Atlantic Ocean in Matosinhos. Siza used concrete to build the pools and walls while preserving some of the rock formation. There was also restoration work done for both the pools and the restaurant in the mid 1990s. The project series includes sketches, elevations, plans, and details, as well as correspondence and project documentation. Photographic materials document the project site, the built project, the model, and drawings. Also included are panoramas of the built project and aerial views of the project site. Note that photographic materials related to the 1995 renovation are also found among these materials, however the rest of the materials related to the renovations are in subseries Recuperação da Piscina de Marés (AP178.S1.1995.PR01).
