Summary:
Modern urban terraced houses or row houses emerged in Europe from the 17th century onwards. Usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the back, they formed the traditional urban block. In Brussels, this bourgeois form of housing took on a particularly varied and inspiring form – including the well-known Art Nouveau residences – and forms the DNA of the city to this day. This publication analyses 100 selected examples illustrating the emergence of the terraced house and its further development in other forms of housing. The result is a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and development of the city of Brussels with its particularly heterogenous cityscape.

The House offers an overview of the development of house and home, from its beginnings in the caves of early man through the variety of structures that have since evolved-- from mud huts and Chinese underground villages to Georgian Arts and Crafts, influenced by climate and materials but also by culture, custom, and religious beliefs. Summary:
Joseph Eichler was a pioneering developer who defied conventional wisdom by hiring progressive architects to design modernist homes for the growing middle class of the 1950s. He was known for his innovations, including "built-ins" for streamlined kitchen work, for introducing a multipurpose room adjacent to the kitchen, and for the classic atrium that melded the indoors with the outdoors. For nearly twenty years, Eichler Homes built thousands of dwellings in California, acquiring national and international acclaim. Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream examines Eichler's legacy as seen in his original homes and in the revival of the Modernist movement, which continues to grow today. The homes that Eichler built were modern in concept and expression, and yet comfortable for living. Eichler's work left a legacy of design intergrity and set standards for housing developers that remain unparalleled in the history of American building. This book captures and illustrates that legacy with impressive detail, engaging history, firsthand recollections about Eichler and his vision, and 250 photographs of Eichler homes in their prime.

Summary:
In 1998 Périphériques edited the book ”36 propositions for a home”. The projects resulted from an international competition to design lowpriced single-family houses. Some of the competition entries have since been built and in this new book, the realization of these and similar houses which were designed in the same spirit, has been documented. These buildings are examples of contemporary residential forms, where creative use is made of prefabricated materials, buildings and surroundings are integrated in a highly individual way, and the feeling of spaciousness is emphasized in the designs. Examples from Abalos y Herreros, Atelier Bow-wow, Gallart, Lacaton-Vassal, Lacoste-Stevenson, Marin-Trottin, MVRDV, 2M2N, Paillard- Jumeau, Ricciotti, Tezuka-Tezuka are included and text contributions analyse the basic principles of low-cost building.

"The bra". "The box kite". "The cat". "The milk carton". "The reclining Picasso". These are the playful names given to the eccentric beach houses of Andrew Geller. Built in the 1950s and 1960s, these vacation homes reflected the idea of summer leisure for a generation more concerned with fun on the beach than ostentatious display. For clients in the Hamptons, on the Jersey shore, and in New England, Geller built dozens of houses, most of wood and most on modest budgets. Geller, who worked with Raymond Loewy and directed the design of such modernist landmarks as the Lever House in New York, combined a modern interest in light, breeze, and functional living with playful form-making.

Summary:
A-Frame constructions emerged in the mid-20th century and have been forgotten for decades. In recent years we are seeing how the spirit of A-Frame style houses is gradually being revived by avant-garde architects who have adapted this approach to more modern times. It is not uncommon nowadays to find examples of modern houses with A-Frame architecture as a hallmark in leading design magazines. This type of construction stands out for its structural simplicity, which in most cases reduces costs, and also for its great capacity for thermal and acoustic insulation, greater speed of construction, elimination of the need for columns, greater strength and structural consistency, among many other benefits. A-Frame homes have a better environmental impact due to energy savings in both construction and utility costs, not to mention a smaller carbon footprint for the environment.
