La première, qui s'est produite vers le milieu du deuxième millénaire av. J.C., peut être appelée «invention des images techniques». Il se peut que d'autres coupures se soient produites dans le passé; mais elles ont échappé à notre prise. Cette hypothèse va de pair avec le soupçon que la structure de la culture est sur le point de connaître une transformation fondamentale. Le présent essai s'efforcera de justifier ce soupçon. Vilém Flusser, né à Prague en 1920, mort en 1991, s'établit à Sao Paulo. Il enseigne à l'université de Sao Paulo, à partir de 1959, la philosophie des sciences et y devient en 1963 professeur de philosophie de la communication.
