Résumé:
This publication provides a selection of 220 modern buildings — from the canonical works of Brazilian modern architecture to barely-known buildings; from works of the six best-known Brazilian masters — namely, Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Joao Vilanova Artigas, Lina Bo Bardi, and Joao Filgueiras Lima (Lele) — to those of young aspiring architectural offices. Coming from different cultural contexts and professional backgrounds, the three authors favoured an open-minded approach to Brazilian production. Considering the vastness of the country and the enormous number of projects, the selection presented here is far from exhaustive but presents a panoramic overview that helps the traveller to see good architecture.

Résumé:
Featuring more than 20 works by Japanese architect Koh Kitayama, this compact monograph covers his practice over a twelve-year period beginning in 2002. Interested in collective forms found in cities and how these are meant to support the activities of everyday life, Kitayama has explored transformations in residential districts in Tokyo in order to contemplate the renewal of its urban composition, comparing it to representative cities of the past. His goal is for architects to present a spatial model for the future with which society can identify, and he develops this through his own houses, residential complexes and integrated urban projects.

Based in Stockholm, Tham & Videgård Arkitekter believes that architecture is about the future, and considers buildings not only as contemporary, but also a form of continued history projected into that future. Co-founders Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård introduce 40 works and the principle ideas that guide their practice – from large-scale urban planning to buildings and interiors. Foremost is the lasting impact and building quality: long-term environmental effects, architectural integrity and function, and the capacity to convey societal ideals.

Résumé:
Torn between a revival of aesthetics and the persistence of conceptualism, critical writing about contemporary art has once again come to focus on differing views of its aesthetic dimension. The context and character of these debates has, however, shifted markedly since the 1960s, with changes in art practices, institutions, political contexts, and theoretical paradigms—and in particular, with the global extension of the Western art world since 1989. This inter- and transdisciplinary collection of essays by philosophers, artists, critics, and art historians, reconsiders the place of the aesthetic in contemporary art, with reference to four main themes: aesthetics as “sensate thinking”; the dissolution of artistic limits; post-autonomous practices; and exhibition-values in a global artworld.

Love was classically thought to come in four distinct varieties--agape (spiritual love), eros (physical passion), philia (friendship) and storge (familial affection). It might be argued that with modernity, one of these--eros--has come to dominate our landscape, where romance and its obstacles inform so many of our cultural narratives and consumer fantasies. Nonetheless, all of these modalities of love continue to structure the relationships that govern human societies. Cabinet issue 55, with a special section on "Love," features Christopher Turner on the "celestial bed" of eighteenth-century proto-sexologist James Graham; Margaret Gordon on epistolary friendships; and Olga Lemerova on the love between humans and their pets. Elsewhere in the issue: Sasha Archibald on the decorative fabric or leather patches worn in the seventeenth century to conceal facial blemishes; D. Graham Burnett on watermarks; and Babak Sadr on how zoos perform annual inventories of their animals, both countable and uncountable.
