Over the past 30 years, the French Swiss architectural photographer Hélène Binet has traveled the world to photograph historic and contemporary buildings, as well as projects in the making. Considered by many the premier “architect’s photographer,” Binet has worked closely with Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and Peter Zumthor among others, who have turned to her to interpret their work. Using only analogue techniques, Binet’s photographs are both a representation and a discovery of her subjects, all of them buildings that break the mold, pushing daringly at the boundaries of their time.

The Herning Museum of Contemporary Art (HEART) in Herning, Denmark, inhabits a new building designed by American architect Steven Holl, who was drawn to the project by the institution's collection of works by the Italian Conceptual artist Piero Manzoni. Holl's complex museum is surrounded by a landscape of hills and ponds that meshes with his structures; the single-story building itself, with its natural light and innovative roof construction, refers to the formal vocabulary of the 1960s factory opposite. In reference to its origins, an overhead view of the museum recalls outstretched shirtsleeves while the façade resembles wrinkled fabric.

Architecture is usually analysed and taught as a discipline that articulates space and geometry, but the mental impact of architecture arises significantly from its image quality that integrates the various aspects and dimensions of experience into a singular, internalised and remembered entity. The material reality is fused with our mental and imaginative realm. The book is organised into five main parts that look at in turn: the image in contemporary culture; language, thought and the image; the many faces of the image; the poetic image; and finally the architectural image. The Embodied Image is illustrated with over sixty images in pairs, which are diverse in subject. Artworks span Michelangelo and Vermeer to Gordon Matta-Clark and architecture takes in Modern Masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, as well as significant contemporary works by Steven Holl and Daniel Libeskind.
