David Georges Emmerich (1925-1996), architecte-ingénieur, fut en France le principal représentant des recherches sur la morphologie structurale en architecture, conjointement à celles de Robert Le Ricolais ou de R. Buckminster Fuller. En 1958, Emmerich invente les structures "autotendantes", où traction et compression s'équilibrent pour former une configuration polyédrique légère, indéformable et autostable, prélude à une architecture sans fondation, articulée sur la combinatoire géométrique de ses constituants.
