Résumé:
The rediscovery of the city that has been evident recently has by no means superseded the human desire for nature. On the contrary, the goal has been finding urban solutions that do justice to these growing needs and do so in ways that meet the requirements for design, ecology, sociology, and economy. This publication addresses the subject of designing inner-city spaces. It documents twenty recently realized examples in Europe, most of which feature greenery, designed by international landscape architects such as Gustafson Porter, Field Operations, Michel Desvigne, Gross.Max, Latz + Partner, and West 8. The projects, built between 2004 and 2010, range from private urban gardens by way of squares, streets, and promenades to large-scale projects such as the revitalization of riverside areas or master plans for the green spaces of entire cities. Urban greenery is an important contribution to ecological urban development. The projects documented offer examples of how this can succeed using the most modern materials and technologies.

Résumé:
The Pavilion examines both the history and the contemporary state of pavilion architecture, something of a niche genre in the field, but with a long history of masterpieces. It consists of two parts: first, the examination of a group of twentieth-century pavilions, and second, a collection of essays that survey historical and more recent examples. This outstanding analysis was produced by students of architecture at Frankfurt's Städelschule. In the theoretical section, well-known authors discuss the materials used in pavilions, starting with influences from the Orient, India and Asia, and moving on to significant twentieth-century pavilions and recent temporary buildings that seem to occupy a space between art and architecture. In addition, the book documents the research and development of a summer pavilion for the garden at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt produced by the offices of Barkow Leibinger and Werner Sobek.

Résumé:
In the 1920s, an unprecedented program of architectural and cultural renewal was established in the German city of Frankfurt am Main. This scheme became inscribed in cultural history under the name ''The New Frankfurt.'' As part of the housing and urban development initiative decided in 1925, more than 10,000 new residential units were planned. The Building Ministry’s architects, recruited from home and abroad, created pioneering work in many areas. Examples include the typification of family-oriented flats, plans for affordable apartments for those on low incomes, the first standard kitchen, the industrial prefabrication of building shells, the construction of schools designed around children’s needs, and integrated urban and green planning. In this book, four essays delve into the cultural background of the scheme and provide illuminating insights into the context of the work of its many actors.

Résumé:
Filled with drawings, collages, and models, this book examines how each firm’s utopian vision was shaped by the times in which it was conceived. The designs by Archigram, a Londonbased firm headed by Peter Cook, Ron Herron and Dennis Crompton, date back to the moon landing and an era filled with hope for new beginnings. By contrast, the latter project, the work of Future Systems, headed by Czech architect Jan Kaplický and David Nixon, was conceptualized at the height of the Cold War, when the future appeared gloomy. While Archigram conceived organic architectures to ensure survival in inhospitable environments, the technical looking designs by Future Systems are intended for use in more friendly climes. Although the majority of these utopian designs were never realized, their plans offer a fascinating look at how architects prepare for a world they can only imagine.
