Résumé:
Ecological and artistic approaches to designing our environment raise important questions which have to be faced by all designers of urban spaces, gardens or landscape: whether to conserve or to intervene, to rely on natural order or apply man-made means and whether to lend nature a romantic or a technocratic appearance. Which approaches to design and artistic concepts are able to unite these seemingly contradictory poles to create sophisticated projects in harmony with nature? In this publication landscape architects, artists, philosophers, social scientists and natural scientists provide answers to these central questions in landscape design and environmental art. Amongst the 17 authors are Jacques Leenhardt (F), Massimo Venturi Ferriolo (I), Udo Weilacher (D), Malcom Miles (GB), Tim Collins (USA) and Jochen Boberg from the MD Berlin with whom this book is co-produced. This volume contains works by more than 50 international artists and landscape architects, among them the internationally renowned Herman Prigann, one of the most active landscape artists. His work is extensively presented here for the first time, and represents four decades of continuing commitment to artistic and ecologically oriented landscape design.

Résumé:
Take a tour through twenty-five modern log homes reborn in the Arts & Crafts tradition, and witness how Craftsman style combines with the latest in log hybrid architecture to create a totally new and unique genre of building in "The Arts & Crafts Cabin". In this new title from log building expert Robbin Obomsawin, the rich Arts & Crafts heritage of the late 1800s that rebelled against mass-produced goods and the opulence of the Victorian era melds beautifully with the ideals of log home design and cabin living, where a simple life and appreciation for fine craftsmanship are held in the highest esteem. This new hybrid style incorporates the exquisite workmanship and sophistication that have become hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design with the warmth and comfort of log elements to create homes inspired by nature, creativity, and simple beauty. With one of the industry's premier photographers, Roger Wade, and the log industry's most prolific and respected author, Robbin Obomsawin, "The Arts & Crafts Cabin" uses spectacular colour photography, floor plans, and compelling historical text to showcase how the principles and philosophy of William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene combine with modern artistry to create some of the most exciting residential and recreational architecture being created today.

Résumé:
"Buildings that Last" provides the layperson with a basis for participating in the discussion about sustainable housing. This book is not about bricks and adobe, nor about cladding with aluminum or glass, nor about the difference between natural and mechanical ventilation. While these are all important aspects of sustainable building, the real key is for the partners in the construction process--including the commissioning bodies--to consider early on the physical, social, and cultural environment in which they want to be accommodated. This first thinking stage can lead to the unearthing of surprising solutions that are considerably more sustainable than what has been the norm until now. Real estate is still too often thought of as a question of meeting the demand for floor space in square meters (or feet, depending)--and little else. Buildings that Last includes examples of studies into the construction of offices for 2040, when buildings will hopefully have an environmental impact that is 95% less than was the norm at the end of the last century. Today's top-scoring projects are also reviewed--the results show that we still have a long way to go in sustaining sustainable development.

The treatment of brownfield sites has become a pressing issue for national and local government, urban planners, developers and designers. Whereas only too often the approach to remediation has been driven by economics and litigation, this title seeks an alternative in proposing an unprecedented weaving together of the naturalist and urbanist. It effectively brings together those in the vanguard of conceptualising this situation from a multiplicity of viewpoints and disciplines. Highlights include an interview with Renzo Piano and features on the work of Glenn Murcutt and sculptor Andy Goldsworthy.

Résumé:
The story of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center at Oberlin College - the first substantially green building to be built on a college campus -encompasses more than the particulars of one building. In "Design on the edge", David Orr writes about the planning and design of Oberlin's environmental studies building as part of a larger story about the art and science of ecological design and the ability of institutions of higher learning themselves to learn. The Lewis Center, which has attracted worldwide attention as a model of ecological design, operates according to environmental principles. It is powered entirely by solar energy, features landscaping with fruit trees and vegetable gardens, and houses a Living Machine, which processes all wastewater for reuse in the building or landscape. Orr puts the Lewis Center into historical design context and describes the obstacles and successes he encountered in obtaining funds and college approval, interweaving the particulars of the center with thoughts on the larger environmental and societal issues the building process illustrates. Equal parts analysis, personal reflection, and call to action, "Design on the edge" illustrates the process of institutional change, institutional learning, and the political economy of design. It describes how the idea of the Lewis Center originated and was translated into reality with the help of such environmental visionaries as William McDonough and John Todd, and how the building has performed since its completion.

Résumé:
Long considered the apotheosis of rustic kitsch, the log house actually has a rich architectural pedigree. Since the late 19th century, a surprising number of architects, along with their artisan-builder counterparts, have transformed the simple pioneer log cabin into a supremely crafted work of high art. "Log houses of the world" is the first-ever chronological survey of the greatest examples of log houses designed in Europe and the United States from 1890 to the present. Included are photographs, plans, and little-known drawings - most never before published - from such celebrated Modern-era architects as Eliel Saarinen, Adolf Loos, Le Corbusier, Richard Neutra, and others. The result is both a tour of many homes, and an important vehicle for garnering for these houses the popular recognition, critical and otherwise, that they deserve.
