Résumé:
In the late 2000s human society entered a new urban epoch in which the majority of human beings live in cities. Whilst the city has historically been viewed as the foundation of democracy and citizenship, the geo-political spaces of modern cities are widely misunderstood despite their key role in shaping contemporary global society. How and why have cities become the command centres of the world economy? Does globalization menace cities as we know them? Are cities able to exercise democratic control and strategic choice when multinational corporate competition increasingly limits the importance of place? The Rise of Cities offers intriguing responses to these questions by analyzing how cities coalesce, develop and thrive, and how they can remake themselves for better for worse. Examining key issues such as the parasitic relationships cities have with Nature, the webs of trade and immigration they rely on to survive, and the spatial structure of the contemporary metropolis, the contributors develop a startling outline of cities in crisis and demonstrate why the State has failed, and must fail, to end the urban crisis. These themes are explored through a variety of concrete, real-world examples of the challenges of urban politics: metropolitan governance, urban redevelopment policy, housing problems, grass roots activism and urban planning. In the background looms the spectre of neo-liberal globalization, with the development of influential world cities related to the emergence of modern telecommunications, the growth of multinational corporations and the generation of a world economy with an increased movement of cultural symbols and artifacts across national borders.

This volume proposes a reappraisal of the 1967 Montreal International and Universal Exhibition across a range of political, social, and cultural spaces: from the dispossession of Indigenous Peoples and what was then known as the Third World, through the aspirations of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada, to the increasingly global ambit of youth culture, medicine, film, and finance. Résumé:
This volume addresses the varied perceptions of Canada’s natural terrain, framing the discussion in the context of landscapes designed by Canadian landscape architects. This edited collection draws on contemporary works to theorize a distinct approach practiced by Canadian landscape architects from across the country. The essays – authored by Canadian scholars and practitioners, some of whom are Indigenous or have worked closely with Indigenous communities – are united by the argument that Canadian landscape architecture is intrinsically linked to the innate qualities of the surrounding terrain. Beautifully illustrated, this publication aims to capture distinct regional qualities that are rooted in the broader context of the Canadian landscape.

As the number and distinctiveness of design directions in contemporary architecture expands, an outcome has emerged of a contradictory nature. While many of these directions hold great intrigue, a troubling aspect arises in that in their realization an 'incompleteness' is often exhibited, one expressing a less developed architectural richness often expressed in an under-utilized nature of the architectural language itself. Internal addresses this issue with a focus on topics that underly the creation of architectural languages. Concentrating on strategies and concepts that inform the creation of cohering architectural languages versus 'external' factors affecting design, such as those necessary to accommodate site or program, ''Internal'' focuses on design considerations incorporating the authority grounded in 'internal' language-based architectural issues. Identifying underlying themes and strategies necessary to create coherent and informed architectural languages constitutes the effort underlying this book.

Résumé:
Tommy Douglas was a Scottish-born prairie politician who believed in the enormous potential of co-operative action for the common good. Award-winning novelist and medical doctor Vincent Lam brings special insight to his portrait of Douglas, who grew up to become a champion boxer and a Baptist minister and then later exchanged the pulpit for a political platform. A powerful orator and tireless activist, he served for seventeen years as premier of Saskatchewan, where he introduced the universal health care program that would eventually be adopted across Canada . As the new leader of the New Democratic Party, he was a staunch advocate of programs aimed at improving the well-being of ordinary Canadians and a steadfast defender of civil liberties. By his example and unflagging efforts, Douglas made democratic socialism a part of mainstream Canadian political life.
