Résumé:
Chicago is universally recognized as the cradle of modern architecture. It is known worldwide for the development, beginning in the late 1800s, of the renowned "Chicago School" of commercial building. In the early 1900s, Chicago saw the birth of Wright's "Prairie School" of residential design, which gave rise to the modern, open-plan house we know today. Other world-renowned architects were also based in Chicago, such as Louis Sullivan, who designed the Chicago Stock Exchange, and Daniel Burnham, architect of the famous Rookery Building of the 1890s. The 1940s were to see the completion of Mies van der Rohe's revolutionary Illinois Institute of Technology and his astonishing Lake Shore Drive apartment buildings. Skidmore Owings & Merrill's landmark Inland Steel Building was finished in 1954, their John Hancock Center in 1970, and their Sears Tower in 1974. Philip Johnson and John Burgee's 190 South LaSalle Street office tower went up in 1987. The 200 illustrations in this volume all come from The Art Institute of Chicago's repository of 150,000 architectural drawings, vintage photographs, models, and building fragments, which comprise one of the most important such archives.

This international exploration of Jewish and Holocaust museums, modern synagogues, Jewish community centers and schools demonstrates how these important structures lend architectural shape to the Jewish identity. Architects commissioned to build religious-based structures are uniquely responsible to the history and values of the community they represent. Nowhere is this more evident than within the Jewish structures of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, a time of disruption, destruction, immigration, and reconstruction of Jewish society. Accompanying a touring exhibition, this important work demonstrates the fundamental differences among fifteen museums, synagogues, community centers and schools throughout the world. It covers sites in America, where the architecture of Jewish institutions looks back on a legacy of uninterrupted development; in Israel, where the great wave of immigration adopted modernist as well as Mediterranean traditions; and in Europe, where rebuilding and reconciliation attempt to balance a history of pain and tragedy.

Résumé:
When the property to the south of Rudolph M. Schindler’s historic house and studio on Kings Road in Los Angeles was sold to the developer of a 3-story, 18-unit condominium complex, a question urgently emerged: How does one build next to the Schindler House? To incite the exchange of ideas on the Schindler House problem, the MAK Center at the Schindler House initiated an architectural invitational in which architects were asked to envision a companion to Schindler’s masterwork. Juried by a distinguished international panel, entries were solicited from a roster of both established and young architects. Proposals were contributed by architect teams COOP HIMMEL(B)LAU, Vienna, Christophe Cornubert, PUSH, Los Angeles, Eichinger oder Knechtl, Vienna, Peter Eisenman, New York, Andrea Lenardin-Madden, Los Angeles, Durfee/Regn, Los Angeles, Günther Domenig, Graz, Eric Owen Moss, Los Angeles, Dominique Perrault, Paris, Odile Decq + Benoît Cornette, Paris, Zaha Hadid, London, Georg Driendl, Vienna, Michael Rotondi, Los Angeles, Klaus Stattmann, Vienna, Sandrine von Klot, Vienna, Lebbeus Woods, New York, Bernhard Sommer, Vienna, Mark Mack, Los Angeles, Umbrella Organization, Los Angeles, and The Next Enterprise, Vienna. "Architectural Resistance: Contemporary Architects Face Schindler Today" presents each of their 20 proposals in the context of a discussion about architecture, urban change, site, and historic preservation.

Résumé:
Soon after its inception in 1928, as part of Public Works, the Department of Physical Planning began work on Van Eesteren's General Extension Plan for Amsterdam (AUP). Issued in 1934, the AUP can be regarded as Amsterdam's first master plan. It fixed the broad lines of city policy on spatial development in a vision statement on the city. Vision statements and the plans they spawn are necessarily centred on the future, but with hindsight such master plans tell us more about the time when they were made. This certainly holds true for the eight such plans that were to follow the AUP. The most recent, 'Opting for Urbanity', was completed in 2003, by the Physical Planning Department. Something new, whether this is a residential estate or a business park, is invariably at the expense of something existing. Seventy-five years after the AUP was issued, the fitting out of urban space for dwelling, working, traffic and recreation is still a subject of discussion. How the space is filled in determines the urban dynamic. This book is not just about the Amsterdam masterplans but more particularly about three-quarters of a century of spatial development in that city. Words, images and a series of maps specially made for the occasion clearly show what has been happening in the inner areas and garden city suburbs of Amsterdam, the urban expansions and consolidations, the plans for traffic and transport, and for greenspace and recreation.
