Résumé:
RMIT's relationship with Tokyo Institute of Technology began in 1994 with a joint research project in the City of Ogaki in Gifu Prefecture. That project was part of RMIT School of Architecture's continuing commitment to an engagement with the urbanism of its region. "By-Product-Tokyo" is the outcome of a new chapter in this dialogue with TITech. The project was instigated by Shane Murray in 1999 with the receipt of a grant to fund student exchange from the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific Association. Nigel Bertram and Marika Neustupny developed the three-month project in Tokyo. This book is itself a by-product of Tokyo, and its contemporary thought. It is an unexpected offshoot of an ongoing line of architectural research being undertaken by a group of Japanese architects and students centred at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Résumé:
Today, architecture schools are truly international in their intake, as students are able to select from courses worldwide. For school leavers and undergraduates, the choice is bewildering. Where different institutions provide very different courses and ultimately very different architects, the very act of shopping for a degree is an incredibly important stage in an architecture student’s career. This book is set to become a touchstone publication for anyone involved in architectural education, from the academic to the aspiring student. It provides interviews with four of the most influential educators/heads of schools around the world: Peter Cook, Chair, the Bartlett School of Architecture, London, UK; Bernard Tschumi, Dean, School of Architecture at Columbia University, USA; Leon van Schaik, Innovation Professor of Architecture, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia; Elia Zenghelis, Berlage, Dusseldorf. This is followed by short self-biographies of eleven further prominent figures including Rem Koolhaas, Anthony Vidler and Paul Virilio. It is the first publication of its kind to comprehensively cover architectural education in its current context as an international market. It will feature the first invaluable listing of architectural schools worldwide: no dedicated listing currently exists in printed form or on the web, giving students a useful reference from which to start the decision making process.

Résumé:
This book tells the tale of the prolific Italian architect, inventor, farmer, writer, and engineer Gaetano Ciocca, whose career took him from the battlefronts of World War I to Stalin’s Russia, Mussolini’s Italy, FDR’s America, and finally to postwar liberal-democratic Italy. Like celebrated counterparts such as Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, Ciocca was a visionary so confident in his vision of a future in which all aspects of life would be rationalized and modernized that no set of practical or political obstacles could ever stand in his way. Ciocca’s endeavors included the development of "fast houses," a "theater for 20,000 spectators," the "guided roadway," and the rationalist pig farms referred to by Carlo Belli as "Ciocca’s Grand Hotel for Pigs."

Résumé:
"Barcelona 1992-2004" offers a selection of chronologically arranged projects that provide an overview of the period that commences with the 1992 Olympic Games and culminates in the huge cultural event that is the Universal Forum of Cultures-Barcelona 2004. The selection has focused in particular on projects involving the city’s openness to the sea and those which have managed to adapt to its existing residential fabric. Presented as separate chapters are projects for new high-rise buildings and schemes for the 22@ plan and the Universal Forum of Cultures. The selection is preceded by a text by William J. R. Curtis, in which he explains how the development of Barcelona in recent years can be set within policies of a more international kind, followed by an exhaustive urbanistic analysis of the city of Barcelona over the last few decades by Josep Maria Montaner. Photographs by Eva Serrats. With full-colour photographs of the city and plans and illustrations of some of the structures, this volume is a comprehensive guide to Barcelona’s contemporary urban structures.

Objectivity and attention to detail distinguish the architecture of Paul Baumgarten (1900-1984). Daring proportions, a quality of lightness and the perfect match of structure and materials characterize his work. The Federal Supreme Court of Germany, subject of this monograph, was specifically conceived by Paul Baumgarten as the architectural expression of a modern legal practice and jurisprudence. Duotone photographs by Florian Profitlich capture what is now a protected historical monument, and original, previously unpublished plans provide documentation of the building's guiding architectural concept.

Résumé:
Chicago is universally recognized as the cradle of modern architecture. It is known worldwide for the development, beginning in the late 1800s, of the renowned "Chicago School" of commercial building. In the early 1900s, Chicago saw the birth of Wright's "Prairie School" of residential design, which gave rise to the modern, open-plan house we know today. Other world-renowned architects were also based in Chicago, such as Louis Sullivan, who designed the Chicago Stock Exchange, and Daniel Burnham, architect of the famous Rookery Building of the 1890s. The 1940s were to see the completion of Mies van der Rohe's revolutionary Illinois Institute of Technology and his astonishing Lake Shore Drive apartment buildings. Skidmore Owings & Merrill's landmark Inland Steel Building was finished in 1954, their John Hancock Center in 1970, and their Sears Tower in 1974. Philip Johnson and John Burgee's 190 South LaSalle Street office tower went up in 1987. The 200 illustrations in this volume all come from The Art Institute of Chicago's repository of 150,000 architectural drawings, vintage photographs, models, and building fragments, which comprise one of the most important such archives.
