''Ad Astra'' is an artist book created as part of a public art project commissioned for the medical library of the University of Montreal Health Center (CHUM), in Montréal, Quebec. Involving the arts, science, and public participation, ''Ad Astra'' consists of an archive of messages that are poetically sent to the stars and to the future. The messages, collected from the hospital community, are transformed by means of a collaboration between art and neuroscience to generate astral images, and ultimately, a collective artwork representing a collection of prayers, hopes and fears. Rooted in deep human experiences,''Ad Astra'' gives voice to the range of emotions and the cycle of life and death that the hospital context is witness to daily. In compliment to the permanent multimedia artwork installed in the library, the book presents a tightly knit set of relationships among the various elements that compose the project, including messages, portraits, neurological diagrams, video-stills, citations, and texts. An introductory essay by Claire Moeder creatively illuminates the core interests of the project while the graphic design by Criterium echoes the installation with material means. The book is a nomadic archive and tactile object that was created to travel beyond the primary site of medical library, and ultimately towards the stars.

Les notions de "deep learning", de "machine learning" définissent aujourd'hui l'intelligence artificielle comme un nouveau paradigme établi aussi bien dans le domaine industriel, économique, militaire ou sociopolitique, que dans nos vies quotidiennes au travers d'innombrables applications, la reconnaissance faciale en étant la plus démonstrative. Il semblait donc primordial de redéfinir les sources historiques d'un développement continu des recherches sur la simulation de l'intelligence humaine depuis l'après-guerre et d'une interaction permanente avec les domaines de la recherche et de la création. C'est l'objet de l'exposition du Centre Pompidou et de cet ouvrage qui l'accompagne. Fruit d'une investigation progressive de la neurophysiologie, mais aussi de la cybernétique, le réseau neuronal s'est imposé comme l'archétype d'une définition de l'intelligence. Ballpoint drawing has evolved into a thriving art form since the pen emerged as a writing tool in the 1940s, when the Hungarian journalist and inventor Laszlo Biro fled war-torn Europe and began manufacturing the pens in Argentina. Throughout the 1950s and '60s, as the ballpoint became cheaper and more accessible, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Dubuffet, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Nam June Paik, Louise Bourgeois, and many others, sketched with the pens. Today, those who make art with ballpoint pen are no longer confined by size or style. They draw on sculpture, wallpaper, canvas, architecture, and 50-foot sheets of paper, depicting a wide range of subjects - from psychologically charged portraits to mutant animals to abstract scribbles.
