Résumé:
From ancient plant pigments that are revolutionizing contemporary fashion to new colors, such as the recently viral Millennial Pink, this wide-ranging deep dive into the world of color guides readers through the origins, connotations, specs, brand associations and artistic use of colors throughout history. Unfolding, like a rainbow, across the visible spectrum, the chapters are divided by basic color - from red to violet and including black and white - and introduced with engaging background information. Each chapter takes a closer look at a variety of specific shades in the color family, delving into cultural references that span fashion, art history, traditional and modern crafts, and product design. Readers will learn about woad - an ancient pigment that was employed by William Morris and has resurfaced in sustainable dyes - as well as the earliest known use of violet some 25,000 years ago. Each shade is accompanied by sidebars that offer technical specifications, mood connotations, and examples of its use in art and commerce. Informative and endlessly inspiring, this guide will be indispensable to anyone interested in how to use and combine colors in their life or work.

Résumé:
Over the centuries our manipulation of the natural world has resulted in an explosion of synthetic dye production and application globally. To gain insight into the history of how folk practices have been lost and technical processes found, anthropologist and textile artist Lauren MacDonald explores a practice that is both ancient and wholly modern: coloring cloth. The pursuit of color has long spurred economic and social contest, and through this deeply researched volume we explore the stories that the materials used to dye cloth tell us about our complex relationship to nature, our troubling ideas about progress and our understanding of power and labor. In Pursuit of Color: From Fungi to Fossil Fuels: Uncovering the Origins of the World's Most Famous Dyes brings together historic techniques, archive photography, specimens and present-day events to tell the histories of some of the world’s most important dyestuffs.

Résumé:
The book discusses the role of art in architecture with a particular focus on colour and the dynamic relationships between light, form, material surface, space and movement. Drawing on historical examples to establish recurring themes, it examines the work of artists and architects whose use of colour is informed by artistic practice. It is divided into three main sections: the first focusing on architecture, the second on the artworks and the final section on collaboration. Throughout, it bridges time, comparing historic artworks and spaces with contemporary ones, addressing key questions such as ''if an artwork is self-sufficient, how is this accommodated within an architectural setting without compromising both?'' and setting out examples of what does and doesn’t work.
