Cutural Cues is the sixth book featured the work of the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship, which brings young innovators in architectural design to the Yale School of Architecture. This book includes the studio research and projects of Joe Day of Deegan Day Design in “NOWplex” a cinema in L.A., Tom Wiscombe of Tom Wiscombe Architecture in “The Broad Redux,” for a new interpretation of the Broad Museum in L.A., and Adib Cure & Carie Penabad of Cure Penabade in the studio “Havana: Housing in the Historic Center.” The studios explore contemporary interpretations of the implications of cinema, the museum, and housing, taking cues from their complex cultural and urban contexts. Along with student work, interviews with the architects about the work of their professional offices and essays framing the themes of the work are combined with insight into the pedagogical approach of these practitioner-educators.

Résumé:
Steve Badanes, Jim Adamson, and John Ringel believe an architect's job does not stop at designing a building, but that it extends to constructing it as well. Now working into their fifth decade, Jersey Devil, the loose-knit group they founded in 1972, bands together under this design/build ethos that an architect's place is just as much on the job site as it is at the drawing board. The trio pioneered design/build practice and their influence has spawned more than one hundred design/build programs. Jersey Devil's process and expertise are unpacked in this Architecture Brief, providing students and teachers with a toolkit for design/build education.

Résumé:
This publication presents local and international voices providing a critical snapshot of recent Chilean urban projects, public spaces, and architectures. It explores the credentials and potentials of Chilean contemporary practices beyond the external categorizations that have received from specialized media, analyzing them instead in relation to the city and the question of public space. This book shows a selection of projects made by Chilean scholars Luis Eduardo Bresciani, Romy Hecht, and Rodrigo Pérez de Arce, which is assessed by the international scholars Saskia Sassen, Stan Allen and Iñaki Ábalos, and it's followed by the conversations between them moderated by Columbia GSAPP Professors Clara Irazábal, Galia Solomonoff and Enrique Walker, plus a reflection on Chilean cities and public space by Mark Wigley.

Résumé:
In the summer of 1970, the artist Les Levine arrived at the University of Toronto to take part in the installation of site-specific work on the quadrangle in front of the University's Hart House. The intended piece—construction materials hung from high-tension rope between campus buildings—was quickly stymied as Levine encountered a series of bureaucratic impediments on the part of the University staff. What ensued was played into the conceptual conceit the artist had envisioned for the project. By collating the correspondence, telephone transcripts, and visual documentation of the eventual installation process, Levine used the work to demonstrate how the university itself functioned as a system. Red Tape publishes this project, which had existed only as a dossier in the artist's archive, for the first time.

This is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language things that tend to be murky and abstruse in the classroom. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation--from the basics of "How to Draw a Line" to the complexities of color theory--provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy, making concrete what too often is left nebulous or open-ended in the architecture curriculum.
