This book presents a terrestrial description of the Seagram Building. It aims to describe how humans and nature interact with the thin crust of the planet. Architecture reorganizes nature and society in particular ways that today demand overt attention and new methods of description. ''The immense material, energy and labor involved in building require a fresh interpretation that better situates the ecological and social potential of design. Architecture and society would benefit from alternative descriptions of building and architecture as terrestrial activities that help imagine how to maximize the impact of architecture on its environment. I argue that the enhancement of a particular building should be inextricable from the enhancement of its world-system and construction ecology. A 'beautiful' building engendered through the vulgarity of uneven exchanges and processes of underdevelopment is no longer a tenable conceit in such a framework. Design can and should evince the inherent solidarity and reciprocity of people, places and politics involved in building architecture.''

Résumé:
Catalogue of the ''Technoscape'' exhibition, which was held at MAXXI in Autumn 2022, focused on the relationship between artistic and scientific disciplines, nowadays closer than ever, and the consequent contacts between technique, creativity, and social awareness. Architecture, engineering, and science have overlapped on numerous occasions during the 20th century. First in the heroic phase and then in the mature phase of the reinforced concrete, then with the affirmation of hi-tech construction methods in the 1970s and 1980s and finally with the eruption of digitally controlled technologies. The volume follows the dual register of the exhibition, first dealing with how technology is making architecture, urban planning, and other related disciplines more aware of their technical and scientific responsibility and capable of opening up new lines of research. The focus shifts then to structural engineering, comparing current masterpieces with previous historical modernist examples.

Résumé:
This book, which since its initial publication has become a standard work for designers of infrastructure, provides a fundamental approach to infrastructure based on four characteristics: as the cause of increased mobility, as a physical presence, as an initiator of movement, and as a collective shared experience of space. These characteristics form the guideline for four chapters that describe a typology of the design concepts that are used worldwide in current practice. Each chapter is illustrated with key projects from around the world, by designers such as Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and OMA.

Résumé:
"If it isn't Electric, it isn't Modern." Such was the slogan of the Philadelphia Electric Company, developer of an unprecedented network of massive metropolitan power stations servicing greater Philadelphia at the turn of the twentieth century. These once-brilliant sentinels of civic utility and activity were designed to convey solidity and immensity in an age of deep public skepticism. They now stand vacant and decaying, a blight in the eyes of city planners and a beacon to urban explorers.'the first book on the buildings and machines that made possible the electrification of the United States, "Palazzos of power" offers a visual and analytical exploration of architecture, technology, place, loss, and reuse. With a foreword by David Nye, this collection of Joseph Elliott's large-format photographs reveal the urban landscape, monumental spaces, giant machinery, and intricate controls that made up the central station. Aaron Wunsch's essay provides historical context on the social and political climate.

is the story of how a structure of unprecedented size and technology was built over the East River, connecting, for the first time, the then independent cities of Brooklyn and New York, two of the most populous cities in America. This awe-inspiring bridge-built between 1869 and 1883 during an age of technological innovation-was not only a modern engineering feat of extraordinary imagination, fortitude, and skill, it also was a towering beacon of human triumph. Author Jeffrey I. Richman describes in engaging detail how the Brooklyn Bridge was built and explains the function of each of its complex parts, from the anchorages and elegant towers to the massive cables, and the challenges each presented. Richman reminds us how profoundly modern and groundbreaking the bridge was.
