In examining events in the life of Romulus, such as his war-making skills, his troubled relationship with the senate and the dismemberment of his body, Fraschetti asks whether authors exploited these episodes to comment upon actual events such as the assassination of Casear. This book is also about how Romans during the reign of Augustus, created their own history in order to account for and justify their future imperial glory, at the cost of their republican ideals. Appendices examine the ambiguous figure of Tarpeia and the archaeological discovery of a piece of wall at the foot of the Palatine Hill which has been dated to the 8th century BC.
