This book presents objects from the 21st Century by Spanish designers of the 21st century. This publication is motivated by the conviction that the concept of the object, as such, has been left behind. The universe of objects, or perhaps we would have to say of "offjects," put forward here is that of the work of those generation that graduated after the Barcelona Olympics: from 1992 into these first few years of the 21st century. What seems clear is that the classic definition of "design" has been rendered obsolete. In the first place because an object's conceptual and narrative charge largely determines its material and physical configuration, and in second place, because many present-day pieces are not produced industrially - some because their designers chose not to, others because they seem not to fit into excessively conservative industrial set-ups. What does seem to be the case is that we are dealing with a new typology of designer, more open, more multidisciplinary and more remote from the traditional commercial circuit, which is not to say remote from the market.

The occupation of space is a trend that can currently be recognized in many creative fields. While furniture and product design were once largely driven by classical industrial and interior design, these disciplines are now also being shaped by the visual culture of graphic design and high-tech production processes. These new influences are contributing to the creation of furniture and interiors that go beyond anything previously designed or imagined. This book examines Dutch commemorative coins which will continue to be minted, despite the introduction of the Euro. In a lyrical article, Gert Staal explores the sentimental and symbolical significance of coins. The results of a workshop ‘Design by the mm3’, in which eleven artist/designers took part, is discussed in an article by Lilet Breddels and presented in numerous illustrations. Gerard Unger subverts his own specialization in typography by arguing that artists are perfectly capable of creating their own lettering for coin designs. Hans Jacobi, keeper of the Koninklijke Penningen Kabinet (Royal Coins Cabinet) in Leiden, throws light on the vicissitudes of Dutch coin design during the last twenty years. In an epilogue, Janwillem Schrofer, a member of the Advisory Commission for New Coinage and the president of the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, presents his outlook on the importance of good coin design.

Italian artist Matteo Guarnaccia’s (born 1993) ''Cross cultural chairs'' is a research-based design project ''about the cultural context of furniture, understanding how globalization is shaping design around the world.'' He writes, ''it’s an exploration that lies between social and technical aspects of chairs.'' To execute this project, Guarnaccia visited eight different countries to conduct research and talk to local design studios, ultimately collaborating with them to portray each culture in the form of a chair.
