Résumé:
In this fictional work by author and art historian Isabelle Graw, fear indeed eats the soul of the protagonist as she struggles to survive in a world increasingly defined and divided by money, addressing the situation with psychoanalytic depth. Relatable to anyone who recognizes the stream of anxious thoughts along with feelings of isolation and abandonment, the gripping inner monologue in this latest novel from Graw also offers instances of relief, connecting all who feel equally stuck, frayed, and neurotic, and suggesting a collective route through this crisis-shaken world.

"piyyut" is a long-form poem assembling fables from the Jewish Diaspora in an attempt to unsettle refugee migration stories while exhuming mystical, prophetic voices in post-Holocaust Europe. Verses are titled and informed by the aleph-bet and examine the entanglements of the diasporic experience through allegorical tales and critical Jewish settler confessionals. Each verse is paired with a drawing by visual artist Angela Henderson exploring the intersections between graphic notation and lyrical, poetic form. Combining and juxtaposing digitally- and hand-rendered elements, the hybridized landscapes both respond to and reflect the complex, speculative and sometimes brutalist journey through past and present.

''Fiction Non Fiction'' is a series of readers edited by Bruno Zhu that pairs voices in literary criticism with the material histories of labor, gender, and race. Each volume offers a close reading of fictional and theoretical works to explore how identity politics have been narrativized by liberal institutions across different times and spaces. Volume 1, published in conjunction with Bruno Zhu's commission ''License to Live'' at Chisenhale Gallery, London, delves into the concept of space. Spanning Martinique and colonial Algeria, Jamaican plantations, and 1970s Lisbon, the collection examines the enduring impact of colonial projects that continue to underpin extractive systems today.

Résumé:
J.G. Ballard's 1975 novel "High Rise" contains all of the qualities we have come to expect from this author: alarming psychological insights, a study of the profoundly disturbing connections between technology and the human condition, and an intriguing plot masterfully executed. Ballard, who wrote the tremendously troubling "Crash," really knows how to dig deep into our troubling times in order to expose our tentative grasp of modernity. Some compare this book to William Golding's "Lord of the Flies," and there are definite characteristics the two novels share. I would argue, however, that "High Rise" is more eloquent and more relevant than Golding's book. Unfortunately, this Ballard novel is out of print. Try and locate a copy at your local library because the payoff is well worth the effort.

Résumé:
Author and artist Edmund de Waal gives us an intimate narrative history of his lifelong obsession with porcelain, or 'white gold.' A potter who has been working with porcelain for more than forty years, de Waal describes how he set out on five journeys to places where porcelain was dreamed about, refined, collected and coveted - and that would help him understand the clay's mysterious allure. From his studio in London, he starts by travelling to three 'white hills' - sites in China, Germany and England that are key to porcelain's creation. But his search eventually takes him around the globe and reveals more than a history of cups and figurines; rather, he is forced to confront some of the darkest moments of twentieth-century history.

Résumé:
The great Swiss-German modernist author Robert Walser lived eccentrically on the fringes of society, shocking his Berlin friends by enrolling in butler school and later developing an urban-nomad lifestyle in the Swiss capital, Bern, before checking himself into a psychiatric clinic. A connoisseur of power differentials, his pronounced interest in everything inconspicuous and modest — social outcasts and artists as well as the impoverished, marginalized, and forgotten — prompted W. G. Sebald to dub him 'a clairvoyant of the small.' He was long believed an outsider by conviction, but Susan Bernofsky presents a more nuanced view in this biography. Setting Walser in the context of early twentieth century European history, she provides illuminating analysis of his extraordinary life and work.
