Résumé:
In the summer of 2025, nine Western States formally recognized the State of Palestine. This State recognition and the resurrection of the moribund so-called “two-State solution” is combined with a criminalization of calls to liberate Palestine “from the river to the sea.” This issue asks: can liberation ever take the form of a state? Borrowing a phrase Sophia Azeb used multiple times in the history of The Funambulist (since our first conversation in 2014), The No-State Solution intends to revisit this concept in the context of Palestine in challenging the very idea of “solution” (Sophia Azeb & Rebecca Gross), but also in other liberation struggles such as the Kurdish (Havin Guneser) and Zapatista (Linda Quiquivix) ones. It warns us against state dreams, such as the ones implemented in Sierra Leone and Liberia (what William C. Anderson calls “Black Zionism” in his contribution), and questions the differences between State and community forms of governance, in particular when it comes to healthcare, as made evident in Cuba and Venezuela (Lisbeth Moya González). Finally, it envisions borderless, stateless futures in Aotearoa (Kai-rui Cheng) and Kanaky (Florenda Nirikani). As for the artwork on the cover, it is an original creation by Samir Harb.

Résumé:
radition and precedent inspire invention, architectural drawing, and media practice. This issue of AD presents a series of encounters with printed drawings, leading to their transformation and reimagination. Archival media from the John Nichols Printmakers & Publishers Collection, located at the A83 gallery in New York City, becomes the foundation for a series of new works by contemporary architects. Collectively exhibited at A83 under the title ''The Sixth Somewhat Annual Meeting'', these drawings explore ways archival artifacts can be newly activated, how intricate material objects invite non-normative readings, and how shifts in media forms produce complex differential effects. The contributors address these concerns through close engagement with specific works, expanding the conversation between drawing, archive, and publication.

Résumé:
a+u’s October issue features the recent works of the highly acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Active since the late 1960s, Alvaro Siza continues to build across different regions of the world, and each work of architecture reflects consciousness of the collective values of a place. This sensitivity is evident in different scales and material used, such as Clay Pavilion in Mexico, which recalls traditional construction techniques, and Renovation of the Manor Dos Magalhães, which sculpturally integrates new landscaped terraces with the critical function of the building, yet makes no unnecessary changes to the façade of the ruin. In addition to 16 recent works, architect and writer Nuno Grande composes a “poem to Porto,” which highlights 5 of the most influential projects by Alvaro Siza in his beloved city.

Résumé:
Since 2004, Manuel Cervantes Estudio has approached architecture as a dialogue with territory, culture, and time. Driven by exploration, the studio develops processes rooted in research, observation, and the distillation of local conditions – climate, materials, craft, and everyday life – into clear and essential forms. Ranging from social housing to pavilions and infrastructure, its projects balance innovation with restraint, seeking synthesis through structural clarity and environmental responsibility. Founded by Manuel Cervantes Céspedes, the practice bridges design, research, and teaching, and is recognised as a leading voice in contemporary Mexican architecture.

The current boom in misogynistic dynamics and topoi builds on a long tradition of gender discrimination against women while also – as this issue argues – exploiting recent technological and political developments. Rather than examining individual sexist practices or remarks in isolation, our current issue addresses misogyny as a cross-cultural phenomenon that expresses a deep-seated, albeit often unconscious, derogatory attitude toward women. In doing so, the focus is on how this attitude is manifested in literature, art, and pop culture, as well in prevailing media and sociopolitical conditions.

Résumé:
Although there were smart ideas and approaches over 50 years ago that sought to do so much better, ecological building has, to this day, been stuck with the dry image of muesli. Anyone who has ever stood in a house made of timber, earth, or straw knows that architecture means far more than "form follows function." Today, natural building materials are driven less by ideology than by pragmatic choices and a pursuit of longevity. The synthesis of high-tech and "eco" has long been aesthetically convincing too. In this issue, we showcase the beauty and potential of natural stone, hemp bricks, and hempcrete; visit a reconstructed "Strickbau" (traditional timber-log construction) that upends the very definition of "immovable property"; look behind the facades of a 16-storey timber housing block; and examine the timber-earth slabs at Hortus, a key project by Herzog & de Meuron.

Résumé:
TURBA is the first journal for the study, theory, and praxis of curatorial strategies in the live arts. The live arts are broadly defined as those arts in which contingent, momentary acts and events, performed by human or other autonomous agents, are crucial to the aesthetic perception and the emergence of meaning in ephemeral time-based work. They include, but are not limited to, dance, music, sound art, theatre, performance art, verbal arts, circus arts, live media arts and inter-arts performance works. With this journal, we aim to create a platform for the exploration of ideas, concepts, constraints, expectations, and contingencies which guide and drive curatorial practices in these fields.
