Résumé:
Malick Sidibé has gained an international reputation for his documentation of an important aspect of the history of Mali. His photographs uniquely convey the atmosphere and vitality of the capital, Bamako, in a period of tremendous euphoric cultural change. Soon after Sidibé set up his own studio in 1962 he was highly sought after to photograph all the happening events and ceremonies in Mali, including football matches, weddings, Christmas Eve celebrations and the surprise parties thrown by groups of youths belonging to clubs. The clubs were named after their idols and the styles of western music (Los Cubanos, Les Caïds, Las Vegas, etc.) which had just started being sold in Bamako. Malian independence brought not only a whiff of liberty and insouciance, communist friendship with brother countries, but also dreams of western society. Sidibé sometimes photographed five reports in one night before returning to the lab to develop the negatives. He would then display on the studio walls carefully numbered index prints which were glued on administrative folders. These are the «chemises» reproduced in this book. In the following days, the party people came to look at the folders and select the photos that they wanted to buy. The folders reproduced in this book constitute a significant catalogue of Sidibé's work. Progressively, in the mid-seventies, youths met less frequently at clubs and went more often to night clubs which were not Malick's haunts. He therefore shifted his activity to studio portraits and camera repairs.

Résumé:
In 1958, the first edition of Robert Frank's The Americanswas published in Paris. Les Americains contained Frank's 83 photographs in the same sequence as all subsequent editions, with the image on the right hand page, but juxtaposed with historical texts about American society and politics, gathered by Alain Bosquet. The following year, in the first American edition, the French texts were removed and an introduction by Jack Kerouac was added. Over the subsequent 50 years, The Americans has been republished in many editions, in numerous languages, with a variety of cover designs, and even in a range of sizes. It is the most famous photography book ever published, and it changed the face of the medium forever. Robert Frank discussed with his publisher, Gerhard Steidl, the idea of producing a new edition using modernscanning and the finest tritone printing. The starting point was to bring original prints from New York to Gottingen, Germany, where Steidl is based. In July 2007, Frank visited Gottingen. A new format for the book was worked out and new typography selected. A new cover was designed and Frank chose the book cloth, foil for embossing, and the endpaper. Most significantly, as he has done for every edition of The Americans, Frank changed the cropping of many of the photographs, usually including more information. Two images were changed completely from the original 1958 and 1959 editions.

This title features photographs by one of French cinema's most influential and enigmatic artists.Any new film and any new book by French filmmaker Chris Marker is an event. Marker gave film lovers one of their most memorable experiences with "La Jetee" (1962) - a time-travel montage set after a nuclear war that inspired Terry Gilliam's "Twelve Monkeys" (1995). His still camerawork is not as well known, but Marker has been taking photographs as long as he has been making films. "Staring Back" presents 200 black-and-white photographs from Marker's personal archives, taken from 1952 to 2006. Some of the photographs are related to his classic films (which include "Le Jetee", "Sans Soleil", "Cuba Si!", and "The Case of the Grinning Cat"), others are portraits of famous faces (Simone Signoret, Akira Kurosawa), but most are pictures of people Marker has encountered as he has traveled the world (an extra who appeared in Kurosawa's "Ran", a woman seen on a street in Siberia). The central section of the book contains a series of photographs documenting political protests Marker has witnessed, including the march on the Pentagon in 1967, the events of May 1968 in Paris, and the tumultuous 2006 demonstrations protesting the French government's proposed employment policies.

An unprecedented glimpse behind the scenes at the practice of Eero Saarinen, one of the greats of mid-century American architecture. Covers 1957 to 1961, the period when Saarinen was working on iconic projects like Dulles International Airpot Terminal, the former TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport and the St. Louis Arch. Richard Knight, Saarinen's "house photographer", documents in black and white photographs and a personal memoir the excitement of being part of this unparalleled creative team. Timed to coincide with a touring Saarinen retrospective (beginning at the Cranbrook Institute in fall 2007 and traveling to Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, St. Louis, New York, and New Haven), the book includes a foreward on Saarinen's artistic vision and office culture by Cesar Pelli, who began his career in the architect's office, and an afterword by architectural historian Pierluigi Serraino on the significance of large-scale model-making in Saarinen's work.

Résumé:
Ari Marcopoulos is best known for documenting boyish subcultures from the inside out. His work on professional snowboarding appears in Transitions and Exits and his photos on hip-hop--five years of images of the Beastie Boys--in Pass the Mic. Aaron Rose, who showed Marcopoulos at Alleged Gallery, has said of the artist's uncanny connection with one set of subjects, a crowd of New York skateboarders ten years his junior, "There was just something in his personality that said, 'Hey man, it's cool.'" It shows. Marcopoulos's self-taught snapshot style brings his subjects in close, and captures, without sentimentality or voyeurism, the intimate feeling of their daily life. Here he focuses on the subculture that is his own family. Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked is a journal-like collection of images of the accidents and pleasures of "normal" life, full of the artist's loved ones, of landscapes and of American social reality.

Résumé:
Naoya Hatakeyama is one of the most noteworthy contemporary Japanese photo artists. Related predominantly to architecture, his oeuvre has been shaped by almost archaeological rigor and interest. Hatakeyama's work encompasses a range of themes, from series devoted to limestone landscapes and architectures - his Lime Work and Lime Hill (1987-1992), which are reminiscent at times of lunar landscapes or prehistoric scenes - to his Underground series, in which the artist pursues urban tectonics in a vertical photographic progression from the air down into the depths of the city sewer system with its almost theatrical lighting effects. At the same time, his consistently serial works also reveal the presence of a horizontal principle as an expression of the importance of the aspect of time in his art - in highly explosive moments, for example, as in Blasts (1995/96), photos of detonations in quarries, or in the urban tableaux conceived as extended-time studies in 48 or 72 parts in his Unlimited series (1989-1997). One of the first monographs devoted to this artist, this book covers all of his serial work as well as some of his most recent projects.
