Kadar Lynn's recently discovered a trove of Margaret Bourke-White's mostly unpublished photographs were taken during the artist's month-long trip to Hungary in 1938. The celebrated photojournalist shot riveting portraits of Hungary's full political leadership right before the outbreak of war. From photos of Admiral Nicolas Horthy to Ferenc Szálasi, these images reveal Bourke-White's skills as a master portraitist and the implied thoughts and attitudes of Hungary's leaders as they faced a monumental juncture in history. This volume enriches Bourke-White's photos with contextualizing essays by historian Károly Szerencsés, speculating on Bourke-White's impressions as she visited Hungary for the first time.

Gardens of Sand is an editorial project compiling 100 original photographs, mostly unpublished, taken between 1859 and 1905. The archive illustrates the themes and specialities of the expatriate photographers of the second half of the Nineteenth Century: study portraits, Royal commission s, landscapes, inventories of significant monuments and buildings, orientalist scenes, steeped in classical European imagination. Nevertheless, the project also explores the confrontation between these pioneers and what was foreign to the West, between Western imagination and the visual reality of the Middle East, a meeting which ended up giving rise to a local photography, gradually moving further away from Western stereotypes.

After World War II, the American road trip began appearing prominently in literature, music, movies and photography. As Stephen Shore has written, “Our country is made for long trips. Since the 1940s, the dream of the road trip, and the sense of possibility and freedom that it represents, has taken its own important place within our culture.” Many photographers purposefully embarked on journeys across the U.S. in order to create work. Hundreds of them have continued the tradition of the photographic road trip on down to the present, from Stephen Shore to Taiyo Onorato, Nico Krebs, Alec Soth and Ryan McGinley. The Emosson region in the Swiss canton of Valais boasts a breathtaking Alpine landscape punctuated by a series of monumental feats in hydroelectric engineering, which include three dams and a power plant hidden in a cavern 600 meters below ground. Dès l'invention du premier procédé de photographie, la daguerréotype, il apparaît évident que la nouvelle découverte doit être mise au service de l'archéologie, et remplacer désormais le dessin ou la gravure. Très vite, les vues des monuments se multiplient et les sites archéologiques italiens, fréquentés depuis deux siècles par les voyageurs du « Grand Tour », deviennent un motif de prédilection des photographes, en particulier des frères Alinari, qui, en 1854, ont créé à Florence leur atelier de reproductions d'art. Du nord au sud de l'Italie, de Suse à Ségeste, ils nous font découvrir l'immense amphitéâtre de Vérone, Rome, mille et mille fois glorifiée, entre Palatin, Forum et Colisée, la villa Hadriana et le temple de la Sibylle à Tivoli, les vestiges d'Herculanum, et surtout Pompéi, qui dévoile son immensité, ses intérieurs décorés, ses morts aussi, figés dans l'éternité. Dans le sud, ils montrent Paestum et ses temples immergés dans la solitude, les sites de Sicile, plus sauvages encore... Des images singulières, tout à la fois porteuses d'informations et d'émotion, entre décor antique « authentique » et cadre pittoresque du XIXe siècle, qui sont les premières représentations de ces lieux qu'aujourd'hui nous parcourons en touristes aisés, guide et appareil photo en main, trop rarement seuls. Following the invention of the daguerreotype and calotype processes in 1839, views of ruins, classical statuary, and the antiquities of the Mediterranean and the Orient were among the first images produced by pioneer photographers. The unique accuracy and immediacy of photographs fundamentally changed aesthetic and scholarly approaches to the artifacts of the past. This book, published to coincide with the inaugural exhibition at the Getty villa, explores the intellectual underpinnings of the relationship between antiquity and photography in the period 1840-1880. Drawing on the extensive collections of the Getty museum and the Getty research institute, this illustrated volume presents an introduction to the subject, followed by a detailed discussion of the influence of photography on archaeology, by an analysis of the ways antiquity is depicted, and by biographical studies of two major photographers, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey and William James Stillman.
