Résumé:
One of the most prized categories of early photography was the reproduction of artworks, a role in which photographs largely replaced engravings in book imagery during the mid-19th century. Photographs of paintings, sculptures, and other works were compiled in albums, ranging from surveys of museum collections and catalogues of works by single artists to illustrated travel guides and archaeological reports. While such albums have often been valued for documentary purposes, their broader role in the institutional development of art has, until now, been overlooked. The first book on the subject, this collection of twelve essays explores topics such as how the acclaim of artists like Rubens grew because their paintings reproduced so well in photographs, how Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes were given a new public identity by the photographer's choice of striking details never explored in traditional prints, and other important ways in which photographically illustrated publications influenced the experience and the history of art.

Résumé:
This thought-provoking collection of photographic landscapes explores the connection between land and national identity. Is Europe a union in name only? How does the land we live on contribute to our culture? How does it divide or unite a collection of cultures? These important questions are at the root of this pictorial examination of Europe’s heterogeneous landscape. This book brings together images from 27 European Union nations and from prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson (Denmark), Andreas Gursky (Germany), Carl De Keyzer (Belgium), Massimo Vitali (Italy), and Celine Clanet (France). The book shows how landscape photography in particular offers critical insights into the characteristics of a place, inviting viewers, through a subjective lens, to form their own feelings toward that place. Organized into three broad geographic zones, it offers depictions of Europe’s wonderfully varied geography — shorelines and fjords, mountains and plains, farmland and urban centers — as it seeks to understand the source of the continent’s diversity and unity.

Résumé:
The Unphotographable is published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name at Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, presenting photographs by anonymous amateurs alongside those of artists such as Diane Arbus, Bruce Conner, Liz Deschenes, Adam Fuss, Man Ray, Christian Marclay, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Alfred Stieglitz and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Jules-Bernard Luys and Émile David are represented by a photograph taken toward the end of the nineteenth century, of fluidic emission from the fingers of two hands; Richard Misrach captures a sandstorm in California in 1976; and Conner is represented by "Angel Light," one of the Angels series of dramatic, life-sized photograms he created in 1973-75, and which explore the disjunction between vision and phenomenological experience. Since opening in 1979, Fraenkel Gallery has presented close to 300 exhibitions exploring photography and its interrelations with the other arts, and The Unphotographable is one of its most ambitious projects to date. The catalogue is edited with an essay by Jeffrey Fraenkel, and includes 50 images in color.

Résumé:
Newtown Creek is a tributary of New York's East River that forms part of the border between the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. During the Industrial Revolution, when its volume of commercial shipping traffic exceeded that of the Mississippi River, the creek was widened, deepened, and bulkheaded to accommodate bigger barges, destroying all its freshwater sources. As one of the oldest continuous industrial areas in the nation, it is now one of the most polluted. Newtown Creek is the first extensive documentation of this forgotten landscape. Anthony Hamboussi's five-year photographic survey captures the creek at a critical moment when gentrification and revitalization are just starting to change the area. From the ruins of Morgan Oil Company and the Newtown Metal Corporation to the footprints of the former Maspeth gasholders, Newtown Creek is a lost chapter in the visual history of industrial New York framed at the moment of its disappearance and transformation.

Résumé:
The range of photographic vision in the National Gallery’s collection of 19th Century French photographs is vast. The collection extends from topographical photographers who made little pretense to art but, because of the sensitivity and skill produced work that transcends the original purpose, to those who considered themselves as artists and the photographs they produced as art. With over 200 illustrations, this abundantly illustrated publication features an original essay on the development of photography in 19th Century France as well as sixty-six individual presentations. Among the dozens of photographers discussed are Eugène Atget, Edouard Baldus, Maxime Du Camp, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Nègre, and Auguste Salzmann. James Borcoman is the Curator Emeritus of Photographs for the National Gallery and the author of several books including monographs on Eugène Atget and Yousuf Karsh. After Modernist Photographs from the National Gallery of Canada, this is the second publication in a series devoted to the Gallery's photography collection.
