Résumé:
Between 1990 and 1998, Guido Guidi made five separate trips to Milan and its surrounding areas. ''Cinque viaggi'' brings together the photographs made there, forming an investigation of one city and its peripheries in the throes of economic and social transformation. As Guidi follows the canal from out in the suburbs toward the city centre, his attention and visual language move from the vernacular to the metropolitan, from wider horizontal views to vertical ‘cuts’ in the urban fabric, from entire buildings and scenes to glimpsed façades and doorways. Along the way, we also encounter inhabitants: a group of young men gathered in a Pasolini-like scene on a bridge in the city’s outskirts; occasional passers-by working, shopping, or stopping to smoke on the city streets; disconnected couples and disparate individuals whose loose citizenship coheres the urban sprawl. While previous books, such as Per Strada (2018) and Tra l'altro (2020), demonstrated Guidi’s fascination with the rural and small-town landscapes of his native region, ''Cinque viaggi'' turns to metropolitan Italy, documenting the dramatic socio-economic changes that have transformed it over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Remnants of rural civilisation and traces of urban expansion are embedded among the first signs of de-industrialisation. These 110 large-format works, many of which have never been seen before, reveal the layers of social and architectural history among which everyday life unfolds. ''Cinque viaggi'' offers an arrestingly subtle picture of Italy's recent past and rumination on its future.

Résumé:
The work of Klaus Kinold, born 1939 in Essen, is part of a tradition of photography, and particularly of architectural photography. Architecture was one of the most important themes even of early photo-graphy not least because it stood still. Initially this was an important characteristic, since exposure times were long. Thus began the affinity of photography with the documentary. Reality and represen-tation were supposed to correspond. Quoting a statement by Roland Barthes, Kinold has referred to the still "mysterious bonus of confidence given to the documentary". At a time when digital photographic and processing techniques make all sorts of manipulation possible, the now rare quality of reliability is assigned to this attitude. It was self-evident for Kinold to explore the period whose very name included the term objectivity the New Objectivity (in German: Neue Sachlichkeit).

Résumé:
This comprehensive book accompanies the first retrospective exhibition of Lewis Baltz’s work following his passing in 2014. It explores the artist’s oeuvre as a complex whole of interrelated series, from his first Prototypes and the Tract Houses to Park City, San Quentin Point and Candlestick Point, through to New Sites of Technology and Venezia Marghera. The book simultaneously locates Baltz’s work in the context of photography and contemporary art since the 1970s, to fully examine his influence and legacy. Baltz is one of the most prominent representatives of the New Topographics movement, which was seminal to the development of conceptual photography. His photo series document the impact of industrial civilization on the landscape, focusing on places outside the bounds of canonical reception: urban wastelands, abandoned industrial sites, warehouses. Baltz’s strategies reflect a deep knowledge of the history of photography and present the photographer as a teacher of seeing.

Résumé:
Fred Herzog is best known for his unusual use of color photography in the 1950s and 1960s, a time when art photography was almost exclusively associated with black-and-white imagery. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as prefiguring the New Color photographers of the 1970s. The Canadian photographer worked largely with Kodachrome slide film for over 50 years, and only in the past decade has technology allowed him to make archival pigment prints that match the exceptional color and intensity of the Kodachrome slide, making this an excellent time to reevaluate and reexamine his work. This book brings together over 230 images, many never before reproduced, and features essays by acclaimed authors David Campany, Hans-Michael Koetzle and artist Jeff Wall. Fred Herzog is the most comprehensive publication on this important photographer to date.

Résumé:
Since 2007, American photographer Jade Doskow has been documenting the remains of World’s Fair sites, once iconic global attractions that have often been repurposed for less noble aspirations or neglected and fallen into decay. Lost Utopias brings together the substantial body of work that Doskow has completed over the past decade, including iconic monuments such as the Seattle Space Needle, the Eiffel Tower, Brussels’ Palais des Expositions and New York’s Unisphere. Doskow’s large-scale colour photographs poignantly illustrate the utopian architecture and art that has surrounded the World’s Fairs, across both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Presented in a handsome, large-scale hardback book, Doskow’s work carries a unique sense of both grandeur and dreaminess, whilst also reflecting upon the often temporary purposes that these structures once held.

Résumé:
Featured in the Guggenheim's 2015 landmark ''Photo-Poetics'' exhibition, New York–based artist Leslie Hewitt (born 1977) is one of the most revered artists working between photography and sculpture. Collaboration has been a central part of Hewitt's art, including projects with William Cordova and Matt Keegan, and her ongoing work with cinematographer Bradford Young exploring the Menil Collection archive of civil rights-era photographs. That cinematic rumination on historicity and the relationship of the archive to memory, minimalism, lived experience and time, sets an exemplary precedent for this first monograph surveying Hewitt's oeuvre.

Résumé:
"Salt Pans" is Edward Burtynsky’s newest book in his acclaimed ongoing series of photographs exploring different industrialized landscapes across the world. Consisting of 31 aerial photos of the salt pans in the Little Rann of Kutch, India, the project is the result of months of intricate negotiations and preparations. These striking geometric images, taken in an intense ten-day period during which Burtynsky photographed from a helicopter, present the pans, wells and vehicle tracks as abstract, painterly patterns: subtly colored rectangles crossed by grids of gestural lines. And yet the reality behind the ironic beauty of Burtynsky’s pictures is a harsh one. Each year 100,000 poorly paid Agariya workers toil in the pans, extracting over a million tons of salt from the floodwaters of the nearby Arabian Sea. Furthermore, receding groundwater levels, combined with debt, diminishing market values as well as a lack of governmental support, threaten the future of this 400-year-old tradition and the lives dependent on it.
