Résumé:
Ezra Stoller's iconic photographs of 20th-century architectural masterpieces, such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, are often cited in aiding the rise of modernism in America. Stoller (1915–2004) elevated architectural photography to an art form, capturing the mood of numerous buildings in their best light. Living and working in New York from the early 1940s to the mid-1970s, Stoller photographed buildings by such architects as Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen, Marcel Breuer, Paul Rudolph, and Louis I. Kahn. His striking images earned him the admiration of critics and contemporaries, but few people are aware of the stunning breadth of his oeuvre, which also included domestic and industrial spaces and important editorial depictions of American labor in the 1950s and 1960s. Ezra Stoller, Photographer, a survey of Stoller's artistic accomplishments, examines the photographer's full range with a fresh eye and unprecedented scope, offering a unique commentary on postwar America's changing landscape.

Résumé:
This monograph on Moriyama follows a chronological order, identifying major themes and examining key works; a beautifully produced, affordable introduction to one of the most influential figures in photography today. Born in 1938 and brought up for a short while in Osaka, Japan, Daido Moriyama spent much of his childhood on the move, due to his father's profession as a travelling insurance salesman. Moriyama studied graphic design and, in the 1960s, moved to Tokyo to work with the VIVO group of photographers, which included Eikoh Hosoe and Shomei Tomatsu. Accompanied by a surge in Japanese economic growth and mass culture, Moriyama was published in several magazines and journals, earning him the accolade of Most Promising Photographer by the Japan Photography Critics Association. Moriyama was a member of PROVOKE Magazine at the time of international youth movements and unrest in 1968. The magazine, and Moriyama's photography, sought to assert an independence over the classically held notion of photography as purely a visual sign. He was aware that the camera can not offer a complete record and it is in this very partialness that the real excitement and enigma in his work arises. Exploring themes of self-expression, the disfiguration of urban landscapes, eroticism and fading Japanese traditions, Moriyama remarked that one of photography's essential qualities is its amateurism, and another its anonymity. These have numbered among his preoccupations from the beginning and most of Moriyama's images follow a snapshot aesthetic, often taken while running or from a moving car, without the use of a viewfinder.

Résumé:
Wallace’s work has played an important role in contemporary art over the past 50 years, from his early experiments with minimalism to his production of serial photographic tableaux and his subsequent juxtapositions of photography with monochrome painting. Consistently demonstrating conceptual rigour and aesthetic innovation, Wallace’s work can be considered a reflection of his position as social historian, critic and educator, with influences as far reaching as film and literature, the role of the institution, architecture, urban development, gender relations, environmentalism and civil disobedience. Organised in clear, concise sections that mirror the intersecting motifs that are present throughout Wallace’s practice : Minimalism, Narrative, Text Works, The Street, The Museum and The Studio, At the Intersection of Painting and Photography features essays that chart Wallace’s career over the past five decades by Daina Augaitis, Jeff Derksen, Diedrich Diederichsen, Stan Douglas, Jessica Morgan, Christine Poggi, Kathleen Ritter and William Wood. The book also includes a selection of five essays by the artist himself and an annotated chronology by Grant Arnold, providing the perfect introduction to Wallace’s lasting career and marking his influence on contemporary art today. A comprehensive publication exploring the oeuvre of Canadian artist Ian Wallace, At the Intersection of Painting and Photography accompanies a major survey of Wallace's work at the Vancouver Art Gallery, opening in October 2012.

-Serge Tisseron

Résumé:
When, in 1909, the color photography pioneer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii began his journey to capture all of Russia in color images on behalf of the czar, the scope and importance of his undertaking were clear. Since 1905 he had planned to systematically document the empire with the color photography technique he had developed in order to give all Russians, particularly schoolchildren, a deeper connection to their country. His color images were not only meant to document the diverse citizens, ethnicities, settlements, folklore, and landscapes of a vast empire, but to create nothing less than a common identity for its populace. The subjects of Prokudin-Gorskii's landscape photography range from the medieval churches and monasteries of old Russia to the railroads and factories of an emerging industrial power. The United States Library of Congress purchased his work in 1948, but it was only recently laboriously restored. Nostalgia showcases these restored masterpieces of early color photography that are a milestone in Russia's cultural history.

John Comazzi traces Korab's circuitous path to a career in photography. He paints a vivid picture of a young man forced to flee his native Hungary, who goes on to study architecture at the famed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before emigrating to the United States and launching his career as Eero Saarinen's on-staff photographer. The book includes a portfolio of more than one hundred images from Korab's professionally commissioned architecture photography as well as close examinations of Saarinen's TWA Terminal and the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana.

Résumé:
The landscape and people of the American Midwest have captivated photographer Terry Evans (b. 1944) throughout her forty-year photographic career. Evans has a deep connection to her native region, which she has explored from a variety of visual and thematic perspectives. Heartland traces the evolution of Evans’s vision, beginning in the early 1970s with her social documentary images of people in Kansas. She became a landscape photographer in 1978, focusing on the grasses, land, and skies of the prairie; this was followed by an aerial survey of the entire Great Plains, from Texas to Canada. She has also photographed Chicago from the air, an abandoned military site, small-town life in Kansas, and historical samples of prairie flora and fauna from Chicago’s Field Museum. More recently, she has documented the steel industry in the Midwest and oil and gas drilling in North Dakota. This illustrated book examines all of these works, which together reveal the enduring beauty of the prairie landscape.

Résumé:
Only recently has Margaret Watkins (1884-1969) come to be cited in the annals of twentieth-century photography. She is remembered as a formidable teacher at New York's Clarence H. White School of Photography and as an active member of the Pictorial Photographers of America. But it is her photographs - now key works in the history of early advertising photography and classic examples of modernist photography - that have earned her special recognition within the history of the medium. Watkins unsettled the established art world of the time with images such as still-life studies of dirty dishes in a kitchen sink and a shower hose in a bathroom. This publication accompanies the first major retrospective exhibition of the work of Margaret Watkins with loans from major public and private collection.
