Throughout this eclectic sequence are the recurring presences of iconography, of souvenirs and mementos, and of the image-makers that surround us day to day. Forming a winding, ruminative road trip, Soth’s photographs are followed by his own notes and reflections in an extended afterword. 'If the pictures in this book are about anything other than their shimmering surfaces,' he writes, 'they are about the process of their own making. They are about going into the ecstatically specific world and creating a connection between the ephemeral (light, time) and the physical (eyeballs, film).' Each book contains five randomised replica vernacular photographs loosely inserted within the pages.

Ce que l’on voit ici est d’une nature indéterminée et tient aussi bien du relevé topographique que de la photographie de paysage. Très peu de ciel, voire pas du tout dans ces images qu’il est quasi impossible de situer si l’on n’a pas repéré sur une carte l’endroit où elles ont été prises. Que l’on soit en France ou de l’autre côté de la Manche, rien ne permet de le comprendre vraiment.

En 2020, le photographe Mathieu Pernot s’est rendu plusieurs fois sur l’île de Lesbos. Située en mer Egée, à quelques kilomètres des côtes turques, cette île a connu en 2020 une succession de crises qui en font un point nodal de notre histoire et de notre conscience. Lieu des aventures et des conquêtes d’Ulysse et d’Achille, ce territoire plonge au cœur de la mythologie grecque et de l’identité européenne. En raison de sa situation géographique, Lesbos a toujours été un lieu de passage pour les personnes souhaitant rejoindre l’Europe. Depuis 2015, le camp de Moria, sert de centre d’enregistrement administratif et de zone d’attente pour des dizaines de milliers de réfugiés venus de nombreux pays en guerre (Afghans, Syriens, Congolais, Somaliens, etc.), et s’est trouve´ au centre de la question européenne sur l’accueil des réfugiés et le droit d’asile. Qualifie´ d’enfer sur terre, le camp a connu, en janvier 2020, un niveau de surpopulation jamais atteint puis a été touché par l’épidémie de Covid. En septembre, il est entièrement détruit par un incendie déclenché par les refugiés révoltés contre leur sort. Ce livre raconte l’ampleur de cette nouvelle tragédie, mêlant les photographies de l’artiste et des images extraites de vidéos envoyées par les réfugiés avec qui il a noué une relation, et constitue ainsi un document unique.

Of Indigenous origin, Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi (1891–1973) dedicated a large part of his life to photographing the Peruvian Andes, reclaiming the pre-Hispanic past through images of Inca ruins and portraits of life in Andean communities in the early 20th century. Chambi’s work brings a new perspective to photography of the time, highlighting the emerging Indigenous discourse that was starting to gain force in South America. While he was not the first to photograph Machu Picchu, Chambi was among the first Peruvian chroniclers of the Inca citadel. Drawing on Machu Picchu’s geometric forms, Chambi’s work entered a new phase in which shape, space and texture build toward more complex compositions and starker contrasts, making him an emblem of contemporary documentary photography in Peru and Latin America. This clothbound volume compiles 170 of Chambi’s black-and-white images.
