Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? Quelles sont les conditions ayant poussé les architectes à intégrer des outils numériques à leur pratique? Tout au long du programme de recherche Archéologie du numérique, le CCA a recueilli les documents d’archives de vingt-cinq projets réalisés entre la fin des années 1980 et le début des années 2000 afin de comprendre cette période en tant qu’origine du numérique. Il existe huit millions d’histoires des origines du numérique en architecture. Ce livre rassemble quatorze d’entre elles pour former une chronologie des réponses à la question suivante : « Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? » Les propos présentés ici offrent une analyse des changements particuliers qu’a subis la pensée de l’architecture, du bâti et de la ville, ainsi que des déplacements technologiques qui ont résulté de cette évolution. Cet ouvrage marque ainsi tout à la fois le point final du programme Archéologie du numérique, et une ouverture vers de nouveaux horizons autour du numérique en architecture. When is the digital in architecture? What are the conditions that led architects to integrate digital tools into their practices? Over the course of the Archaeology of the Digital research program, the CCA has collected the archival records of twenty-five projects realized between the late 1980s and the early 2000s in order to understand this moment as a point of origin for the digital. But if we take care to identify the digital as a condition that is made possible by the conceptual foundations of digital media and not necessarily by digital media itself, the boundaries of the digital moment—when it began and under what circumstances—become less clear. There are eight million stories of the origins of the digital in architecture, and this book brings together fourteen of them in a chronology of responses to the question of when the digital is in architecture. The arguments address specific changes in ways of thinking about architecture, building, and cities, as well as the shifts in technology that resulted from these changes, marking both a capstone to Archaeology of the Digital and the beginning of an investigation of other beginnings of the digital in architecture. Asking a question like When is the digital in architecture? can produce eight million stories in response, and eight million digressions and redirections that narrow in focus and change geographies, producing a Tristram Shandy of the digital as the CCA continues to build its digital archive and makes it increasingly accessible to researchers. If this novel of digressions is distributed across future research projects and extended with studies of new archival material, so much the better for the reader, in our opinion.

By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zu¨rich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Examinar os cruzamentos entre as culturas do livro e da arquitectura expõe eixos ao longo dos quais o conhecimento circula entre páginas e edifícios e, de novo, regressa aos livros. Seja na celebração de construções específicas ou na produção de livros singulares, as páginas e a impressão são manipuladas para transmitir ideias arquitectónicas. Ao dissecar uma quantidade substancial de livros através de cinco ferramentas conceptuais – textura, superfície, ritmo, estrutura e escala –, André Tavares analisa as qualidades materiais dos livros para avaliar a forma como se entrelaçam com o conhecimento da arquitectura. A história detalhada de Befreites Wohnen, de Sigfried Giedion, e as duas encarnações do Crystal Palace, em Hyde Park e Sydenham, oferecem um pano de fundo que nos confronta não apenas com o desenvolvimento do livro industrializado, mas também com a sua configuração enquanto poderoso instrumento de comunicação e conhecimento.
