Résumé:
Although appropropriation is often associated with the 1980s practice of such artists as Peter Halley, Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince, and Cindy Sherman, as well as the critical discourse of postmodernism and the simulacral theory of Jean Baudrillard, appropriation’s significance for art is not limited by that cultural and political moment. In an expanded art-historical frame, this book recontextualizes avant-garde photomontage, the Duchampian readymade, and the Pop image among such alternative precursors as Francis Picabia, Bertolt Brecht, Guy Debord, Akasegawa Genpei, Dan Graham, Cildo Meireles, and Martha Rosler. In the recent work of many artists, including Mike Kelley, Glenn Ligon, Pierre Huyghe, and Aleksandra Mir, among others, appropriation is central to their critique of the contemporary world and vision for alternative futures.

Résumé:
The Posthuman Dada Guide is an impractical handbook for practical living in our posthuman world - all by way of examining the imagined 1916 chess game between Tristan Tzara, the daddy of Dada, and V. I. Lenin, the daddy of communism. This epic game at Zurich's Café de la Terrasse - a battle between radical visions of art and ideological revolution - lasted for a century and may still be going on, although communism appears dead and Dada stronger than ever. As the poet faces the future mass murderer over the chessboard, neither realizes that they are playing for the world. Taking the match as metaphor for two poles of twentieth and twenty-first century thought, politics, and life, Andrei Codrescu has created his own Dadaesque guide to Dada - and to what it can teach us about surviving our ultraconnected present and future.

Résumé:
Initiated by a series of events and discussions during the exhibition ‘Gest’ — at the Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, London - this book includes a range of essays and interviews bringing together philosophers, artists, theorists and critics to discuss new approaches to art writing. It operates in the widening gap between the mainstream art magazine and the academic journal in order to create new conjunctions and productive disjunctions between theory and practice out of which new voices and new modes of art writing emerge. Contributors include: Jennifer Allen, Eric Alliez, Devrim Bayar, Dan Fox, Rainer Ganahl, Johnny Golding, Peter Osborne, Anne Pontégnie, Nina Power, Ralph Rugoff, John Russell and Dirk Snauwaert.

Résumé:
In 2007, Serpentine Gallery Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist and artist Olafur Eliasson invited more than 100 leading artists, architects, filmmakers, academics and scientists--including Peter Cook, Simon Baron-Cohen, Gloria Friedmann, Neil Turok, Kim Gordon, Spartacus Chetwynd, Simon Forti, Fia Backstrom and Joseph Grigely--to expand the notion of experimentation for their 24-Hour Experiment Marathon, held in the Rem Koolhaas-designed Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. In the tradition of Obrist's now-legendary ongoing 24-Hour Interview Marathon, the crowds were standing-room-only and the action never stopped. This publication details the more than 40 screenings, performances and experimental films making up this genre-bending blend of science and art.
