Résumé:
Thanks to high-performance composite structures made of wood and steel or concrete, wooden buildings are now being erected far beyond the high-rise boundaries. An end to the increase in altitude is hardly in sight. Wooden constructions are also on the uptrend in residential and office construction, sports halls, industrial buildings and bridges. They are the epitome of sustainable building and, thanks to new prefabrication processes, are also competitive in terms of construction costs. The book shows the current development of structural planning with wood on the basis of around 20 outstanding engineering structures. The engineers involved in the planning describe the conception of the supporting structures as well as individual solutions for their implementation. Technical articles from research and technology round out the book.

Résumé:
"New standards" examines the conditions that affect standard, industrial, and manufactured buildings by revisiting a forgotten chapter of wood construction in post-war Finland. Puutalo Oy (Timber Houses Ltd.) was established in 1940 as part of Finland’s response to the war refugee crisis. The company quickly became one of the largest manufacturers of prefabricated wooden buildings – tens of thousands were shipped from Finland to every inhabited continent, constructing a largely overlooked legacy of housing and urbanisation. A new perspective on this legacy is given through careful analysis of these buildings and projects as they emerged from a rapidly changing political landscape.

Résumé:
Plywood is an astonishingly versatile material, made by gluing together layers of cross-grained veneers, creating a pliable board that can be stronger than solid wood. Stylish and practical, plywood offers huge possibilities for experimental design, and it has been used to make a wide range of products, from aeroplanes, boats and automobiles to architecture and furniture. This book traces the history of plywood from its use in 18th-century furniture, through its emergence as an industrial product in the 19th century, to a material celebrated by 20th-century modernists such as Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames. An ideal material for the digital age, plywood has become popular again in recent years and is widely used in contemporary design and manufacture. Produced to accompany an exhibition at the V, this book is the first comprehensive study of the history of plywood and its myriad applications throughout the ages, unveiling the stories behind objects that surround us and that we often take for granted.

Résumé:
French journalist Michèle Leloup together with architect François Leclercq—a pioneer of timber construction in France—have for a long time explored the ecological, economic, industrial, and technical challenges of using timber for major structures and urban architecture. This book summarizes their findings using examples from the French forestry and construction industry. It also takes a look at Austria and the innovative work by Hermann Kaufmann, an internationally revered leader in the further development of traditional timber architecture. In addition, the book features five projects by Leclercq Associés. Richly and attractively illustrated with new images by French architecture photographer Cyrille Weiner, the book offers a concise survey of topical questions and findings in contemporary timber construction.

Résumé:
Building with wood as an ecologically viable material is a tradition with a long history. The timber architecture, which has ensued over the past centuries, reveals to the modern observer the depth of knowledge which has enabled both Eastern und Western cultures to use this material in such a creative way. In the most typical method of building with wood, elements are connected by using wood joints which do not require the assistance of adhesives or metal connectors. This art of wood jointing reached its zenith in Japan; but Europe too provided its share of highly influential forms. By looking at several hundred examples from Japan and 18 European countries, with a new chapter on China added to this enlarged edition, this book de-scribes in detail the history of timber architecture in terms of its technical, aesthetic and ecological dimensions.
