Sebastiano Serlio was the most important architectural writer and theorist of the sixteenth century. The author of the first wide-ranging illustrated book on architecture, he produced a complete set of model designs as well as practical solutions for everyday design problems. This volume, the second in a two-volume series of Serlio’s entire works, presents the previously unpublished sixth book, the seventh book, and, as well as The Extraordinary Book of Doors, his little-known Castrametation of the Romans, each of which demonstrates Serlio’s sophisticated design theories. This is the first translation of Serlio’s later works and the first time that the long lost sixth volume has been united with its companion works and restored to its intended position. The book also includes an introduction and notes by translators Vaughan Hart and Peter Hicks that demonstrate Serlio’s significance within the history of architecture and the importance of these neglected texts to our understanding of Serlio’s work.

Momus is the most ambitious literary creation of Leon Battista Alberti, the famous humanist-scientist-artist and "universal man" of the Italian Renaissance. In this dark comedy, written around 1450, Alberti charts the lively fortunes of his anti-hero Momus, the unscrupulous and vitriolic god of criticism. Alberti deploys his singular erudition and wit to satirize subjects from court life and politics to philosophy and intellectuals, from grand architectural designs to human and divine folly. The possible contemporary resonance of Alberti's satire, read variously as a humanist roman-à-clef and as a veiled mockery of the mid-Quattrocento papacy, is among its most intriguing aspects. En tant que discipline, la théorie de l'architecture se situe d'abord dans le champ de la littérature artistique et se manifeste par des traités autant que par des chroniques, des pamphlets, des textes romanesques, voire des utopies. La tradition scientifique du traité remonte aux "Dix livres de l'architecture" de l'ingénieur-architecte Vitruve, ouvrage dédié à l'empereur Auguste. « Geometria et perspectiva » de Lorenz Stoër est un ouvrage publié en 1567. Elève d’un élève de Dürer, qui quelques décennies auparavant (1525) avait posé les bases de la perspective moderne à la suite d’Alberti, Stoër n’a laissé que peu de traces dans l’histoire de l’art – en dehors de cet ouvrage inclassable ne subsistent de lui que trois recueils de dessins (souvent) répétitifs de polyèdres et quelques dessins. « Geometria et Perspectiva » ne compte que 12 feuillets (soit 24 pages), sans aucun texte ni (même) introduction : chaque feuillet reproduit en son recto une gravure d’une sorte de paysage où fragments de ruines monumentales voûtées (peut-être antiques), arbres et plantes, ornements en courbes et contrecourbes en formes de S ou de C, et corps géométriques en forme de polyèdres se trouvent superposés au sein d’une perspective générale défiant les lois « naturelles » régissant la mise en oeuvre d’une profondeur de champ supposée reproduire la vision d’un paysage. Probablement liées à la pratique de la marqueterie, ces planches étranges sont fascinantes en ce qu’elles offrent à voir des paysages totalement imaginaires dont les « fausses perspectives » ne sont pas sans rappeler l’oeuvre bien ultérieure de M. C. Escher.

Sebastiano Serlio (1475-1554) was the most important architectural writer and theorist of the sixteenth century; despite this, his writings have been virtually inaccessible until now. This translation of Serlio's five-volume treatise--he died before publishing two further volumes--replaces the only other English version, one that was produced in 1611 from an inaccurate Dutch translation of the Italian original. Vaughan Hart and Peter Hicks, working directly from Serlio's own corrected editions, here provide new access to his highly influential treatise. Serlio introduced northern Europe to the principles of classical design. When Christopher Wren was building St. Paul's Cathedral and when John Wood designed the streets of Bath, for example, both architects had Serlio's books on hand. Serlio begins with the rules of geometry and perspective, and continues with a description of the ornamental splendor of the baths, temples, arches, and palaces of ancient Rome. He includes advice on how to incorporate classical features into interior designs. In an innovative discussion of Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns, to which he added Composite, Serlio established a canon of Five Orders that held authority for over a century. He illustrates the use of these orders in twelve temple designs. Serlio's attempt to codify the rules of a design language that utilized tradition while facilitating invention mirrors similar efforts by architects in the twentieth century to establish an architectural order through rules governing proportion and form. Serlio's beautiful woodcut illustrations are reproduced in this edition, which also includes a thorough introduction, commentary, and glossary of terms.
