The London-based NaJa and deOstos architecture office was founded by Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo de Ostos as a platform for experimental architecture. The architects run their office as a studio that tackles the challenges arising from the manifold possibilities presented by urban situations and social dynamics by developing alternative urban concepts. One of their projects is the "Hanging Cemetery of Baghdad”, which they have continuously developed since 2004. In his introduction, Peter Cook says that as an architect, one could essentially go into denial in view of the harrowing situation in Baghdad. NaJa and deOstos research the situation and react with the language of experimental architecture.

Résumé:
Three places of growing up – the Institution for the Blind at Regensburg, the Cantonal School Rychenberg / Winterthur and the Lecture Hall, Zittau – three concepts for a school environment. A different framework determines the progam and the utilization of each respective building type. Realization of the projects with their specific requirements was preceded by an open competition. Award winners are young offices realizing their first big project with this commission. The works of these young architects are displayed in this exhibition for the first time. The Institution for the Blind by Georg Scheel Wetzel Architekten : a partial or complete loss of the sense of sight determined the layout of the complex. In order to enable children to find their way in the building, a strong focus lies on the senses of touch and hearing. Hence, the building is organized on a single floor and the choice of materials underlines the haptic experience of the interior and outer spaces. Apart from the school rooms, the building also provides units of accommodation for stays up to several days. The Cantonal School Rychenberg / Winterthur by Haberland Architekten,,an extension of the building erected in 1960 – 63 by Eric Lanter and a continuation of the Corbusian composition, at the same time utilizes exposed concrete for its façades. All functions are accommodated within an elongated construction consisting of a base and a cube placed above it. Situated off the existing buildings, the base is accessible from the slope and serves as terrace and recess area. It contains class rooms as well as a multi-use sports gym with weights and gymnastics facilities. The cube accommodates a media center and music rooms and is situated between the main building and the hall. The Lecture Hall in Zittau by Tilmann Bock Norbert Sachs Architekten marks the beginnings of a new location for higher education. The new campus center consists of one large and three smaller lecture halls and is completed by two seminar rooms. The lecture hall building is characterized by a fluid spatial movement and accessibility. Starting from the central campus place, the foyer opens up the internal room plan moving past accesses to the lecture halls and a mezzanine toward the upper floor. The open theater on the roof terrace may be used as "open air" lecture hall or as event space for the university.

Résumé:
In addition to Graft’s the widely published projects, like the prize-winning Hotel Q in Berlin, Restaurants Fix and Stack in Las Vegas and several international houses, the exhibition will focus on the new and unpublished work of Graft, including numerous high-rise buildings, special hotel designs and private residences, research installations as well as public projects. Graftworld refers to Graft’s specific method of work process, which fuses syntactic, semantic and phenomenological aspects into architecture. Graft uses narrative elements of cinema, exploiting space - time interconnections through storyboarding with progressive technical research of long term collaborations with various companies. The exhibit will showcase this methodology in an accessible, usable exhibition sculpture, an interactive lounge displaying not only projects of all three office locations but providing chillout zones to relax as well. Classical distinctive architecture elements like floor, wall and ceiling will be fused into a lounge-display-hybrid. Graftworld is thought to be inclusive and rather crosses and blurs boundaries than accepting their exclusive nature. This approach also touches on the increasing transition of distinct modern mono-functional living and working environments, that are blending into new urban lifestyles of the metropolitan nomads. Graftworld proposes architecture that can evolve to be sculpture, be furniture, be a product, be an urban scenario, be landscape at the same time. Design, methodology and technology are not classically “displayed”, but are integrated in the Graftworld.

Résumé:
Architect Jong Soung Kimm has his roots in Korea, but he spent his formative years as an architect in Chicago. He was educated at the Illinois Institute of Technology and after graduation he worked in the studio of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for over ten years until 1972. While working for the master, Kimm participated in, among others, the Toronto-Dominion Centre Banking Hal, the Reception Hall on the 54th floor of the T-D Centre, or the 1968 Mies van der Rohe Retrospective at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin; exhibition design proposal for the new Brown Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. All these projects deal with a unique Miesian mode of creating space which Mies van der Rohe had pioneered since Barcelona Pavilion (1928/29) and Tugendhat House (1928-30). Over the last twenty some years after his return to Seoul in 1978, Jong Soung Kimm has produced a significant body of built work as the lead architect of SAC International, which grew and developed under his participation. Some of the more significant work of architecture will be presented in this exhibition. Kimm’s work is characterized not only by his obvious debt to the principles of Mies van der Rohe, but also by Kimm’s sensibility derived from the cultural milieu he hails from. Eight projects will be shown that encompass museums, university buildings, a long span gymnasium building, two high-rise structures, one a hotel, the other a headquarters office for a major global enterprise. It is timely to present the work of an architect with multi-cultural background such as Jong Soung Kimm in our increasingly global architectural scene today.

Résumé:
The architects Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner, over the last ten years, have developed the Caracas/Venezuela based Urban-Think Tank (UTT) into an international network to face the challenges of uncontrolled urban growth in the dense informal centers of the 21st century Mega-cities. The exhibit will include photos, videos and projects that question the notion of contemporary architecture and urbanism that pulls together some of the Urban Think Tanks most consistent propositions. UTT has moved to propose design solutions, to make that crucial passage from protest to project in an effort to make a real impact in Caracas and in Europe and North America, presenting the relevance of their ideas for the Stadtwerk in Salzburg and for a Vertical Gym in Spanish Harlem, New York. ‘Moderating Urban Density’ exhibit shows how negotiation and design can work in the interface between the social conflicts and the production of new urban infrastructures, architecture, and sustainable human environments in the so called “barrios” of the informal mega city.

Résumé:
The "Friedrichswerder" is situated next to the Gendarmenmarkt in opposite of the Federal Foreign Office and is the construction site of 47 "Berlin Townhouses".This new city district lies on the historic site of the first city extension from the old town Berlin-Cölln, between 1650 and 1700, and will be redeveloped in following the historic pattern. The aim is to obtain and recapture the living in this old city district. This Type of urban housing gives the possibility to live in the historic center of the city and, at the same time, to have the advantage of living in a house with garden. A long and narrow shape creates the typicall characteristic of these lots. The senat department of the city decided not to restrain the ambitions for individual design of the houses. Just the size of the lots and the number of levels were regulated. So almost every kind of desired design for the clients is satisfiable. Every client could choose his own architect. The berlin sized architect Johanne Nalbach builds seven of these house. They are under construction yet and will be finished in 2007. The Townhouses by Johanne Nalbach The Townhouses are characterized by the integration into the urban context. The two houses on the Oberwallstrasse represent the dialog with the city. The urban space demands a higher grade of restrain of material and colour of the facades. The other side of the new city district, is dominated by the strong neighbourhood of the Federal Foreign Office. Five of the houses by Johanne Nalbach are situated in this green area in front of the former Reichsbankgebäude. According to the architect the urban context gives the strength to a more individual design on this side for the houses and functions as a contrast to the regular historic façade of the 30s. The houses show the individuality of the clients and the influences of the regional and traditional culture through the articulation and choice of the materials of the facade. Representative living in the center of berlin with garden, roof terraces, living and working consolidated – the aim was to reach the most flexible possibilities of living. Level high windows dominate the design of the façade and submit the light to reach as far as possible into the depth of the houses. The center of the house is characterized by an open fireplace. The room´s altitude of 4 m and the vertical views produce a spatial liberality and emphasize the vertical idea of these houses. The linearity of the single run staircase, the free spaces and the galleries are the instruments to procure unconventional experiences of space.
