Résumé:
The former missile station in the Hombroich cultural area is the site for another outstanding architectural project that blends harmoniously with its environment. Tadao Ando sees this as an experience that uses a combination of simple building materials, glass and concrete, to create a dialogue between building and nature. Viktor and Marianne Langen’s life work forms the basis for this new art house, which Japanese architect Tadao Ando was contracted to design. It will be completed in the spring of 2004. The first exhibition will be dedicated to a selection of the Langen collection of modern and Japanese art. The Langen Foundation aims in future to stimulate unusual meetings between art and its surrounding architecture. Tadao Ando’s architecture, a built space as an independent sculpture, and the presentation of the art inside it create the possibility of interactive experiences.

Résumé:
Conceived as a set of "Flexible Standards," this new addition to the Pamphlet Architecture series proposes a new way of thinking about roadways in cities. By reexamining the urban expressway as a political, physical, and mythic manifestation of American culture, this compelling pamphlet serves as a design manual for planners, a novel atlas for drivers, and a collection of proposals that reaffirm the role of architecture in urban planning. The thirteen projects take as their subject a site of contested transportation infrastructure — the Sheridan Expressway. By proposing new typologies for this site, these studies seek to mediate the spaces in the city where local and regional meet. Referencing the introduction of the modern parkway into the Bronx, the grading of the Central Park transverse roads, and other works that have redefined the relationship between parks and roads, author Jonathan Solomon suggests a system by which large projects might again be built in American cities.

"Armed surfaces" presents DRD Lab's investigations into contemporary reality and a new typology for living. An analysis of transitional moments in daily life instigates a re-examination of Modern Functionalism as an ideology of standardisation and normalcy. The DRD Lab uses theory, spatial and cultural analysis, dynamic measurement, temporal positioning and their collected data to develop a non-standard diagram which exposes the new role of architectural surfaces as 'performing surfaces'. This concept is explored through a series of research-oriented projects which include 'custom mass produced' contemporary housing, a performance induced landscape and an urban frontage. In the diverse projects which she undertakes, Richter seeks to radically reinvent urban design through a game of 'retracing' and 'restitution', founded in the notion that information is what qualifies space. The book explores new solutions to architecture and planning exposing an alternative view of architecture.

Résumé:
The Russian projects by (EEA) Erick van Egeraat associated architects are another step in EEA’s progression east. Beginning in 1994 with the completion of the first Eastern Europe Head office of ING Bank and Nationale Nederlanden, EEA has steadily worked on a number of projects in Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland and now Russia. Deeply moved by the richness of the architecture of these Eastern Europe countries, Erick van Egeraat set himself the task to develop a contemporary response to their architectural heritage. Connecting the demands of contemporary life with the quality of the historical surroundings, he defines his approach to architecture as ‘Modern Baroque’. Seeking to develop an architecture that can inspire, offering temptation as well as solace, the opportunity to work in the capital of the former USSR, and working closely together with the client, Capital Group, on a number of projects, the context of Russia today, has been proven to be completely different from previous experiences in Eastern Europe. The EEA Moscow projects seek to express a new sensuality, catering for the new lifestyle of Moscow citizen after generations of communism. The projects - housing as well as offices and entertainment- express a desire to bridge the potential gap between progress and development and the quality of historic architecture. The invitation to be part of the international competition for the extension of the Mariinsky theatre in St. Petersburg gave EEA the opportunity to further explore the possibilities of ‘Modern Baroque’. Challenged by the intricate detailing and materialization of the classical architecture of the existing theatre, and supported by extensive experience in theatre design in the UK and the Netherlands, the proposal for the Mariinsky is an example of Erick van Egeraat’s quest for contemporary architecture.

"Mathland : from flatland to hypersurfaces" provides a concise summary of how our perception of the space around us has radically changed in recent years. We could even go as far as to say that we ourselves shape the space around us according to how our perceptions of the universe alter and develop, and mathematics plays a pivotal role. In this book, the “virtual” protagonist of the journey through the concept of space is the square.
