Résumé:
Since March 2000, photographer Joel Sternfeld has been documenting the abandoned elevated railway, the High Line, which runs down the West Side of Manhattan. Sometimes a river of grass, sometimes more like wheat fields of Canada, this unique ruin permits contemplation of nature, and of cityscape. Walking the path of this true time landscape, experiencing the seasons as they unfold in a ribbon within the vertical architectural landscape of New York City, Sternfeld has created a suite of images marked by quiet grace and formal rigor. In this book, as in all of his work, landscape is read as a social and cultural indicator.

Résumé:
Millions of people in New York and New Jersey consider the Hudson River as familiar as their own backyard yet only have a superficial knowledge of the landscape and land use of this river's waterfront. This book deepens readers' understanding with an aerial portrait of the river’s shores from the Battery, at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, to the river's origin near Albany. Focusing on man-made sites rarely seen by those who travel along the river’s banks — some of which can only be seen aerially — the book showcases the shore area’s vanishing (or vanished) avenues, prisons, power plants, quarries, parks, condos, and redevelopments.

Résumé:
The post-war years were a very intense period of experiments, visions and imagination. The end of such a tragic period for the world enabled intellectuals and architects in particular, but also film-makers to rethink the future and imagine new situations with an optimistic use of technologies. For some of them, such as Buckminster Fuller, technology was the resource that was to save the world, as in the case of covering Manhattan with a glass dome, almost to preserve it like an ancient ruin. Thus, this new issue of archphoto2.0 is dedicated to the "Visionary Thinkers", to those who turned their minds to imagine new scenarios.

Résumé:
In the city there are ways to escape the grid and walk along lines unseen. The city parks of New York offer this escape, eliciting both alienation and intoxication. They allow citizens and nature both a space for growth, a second city away from eyes on the street. In the city there are ways to escape the grid and walk along lines unseen. The city parks of New York offer this escape, eliciting both alienation and intoxication. They allow citizens and nature both a space for growth, a second city away from eyes on the street. Adam Pape's photographs utilize the city parks in Washington Heights and Inwood as the backdrop for a narrative that unfolds in between day and night. These monochromatic images, directed by Pape and artificially lit, depict an ongoing exchange between humans, animals, and the landscape. In the furthest reach of Manhattan, sectioned off from further development, history and myth are at play.

"The works: anatomy of a city" offers a cross section of this hidden infrastructure, using beautiful, innovative graphic images combined with short, clear text explanations to answer all the questions about the way things work in a modern city. It describes the technologies that keep the city functioning, as well as the people who support them-the pilots that bring the ships in over the Narrows sandbar, the sandhogs who are currently digging the third water tunnel under Manhattan, the television engineer who scales the Empire State Building's antenna for routine maintenance, the electrical wizards who maintain the century-old system that delivers power to subways.

Résumé:
The Space Reader provides a highly pertinent and contemporary understanding of space for a new generation of students and architects. It espouses a definition of space that is heterogeneous (an object or system consisting of a diverse range of different items). An example of heterogeneous space, for instance, is Manhattan where complex and multiple social and technological conditions are overlaid. (This is to be contrasted with highly centralised and ordered Modernist cities.) With the onset of globalisation and the Web, heterogeneneous space, with its emphasis on differentiation, is more relevant to the contemporary condition, which encourages the mixing of space, than a much more static conception of Modernist space.
